Well you see it a little differently from me. To me and many others, it is driven by racism and xenophobia. His father renounced Islam and became an atheist and his father was not part of his life (parents divorced when he was 2, then was killed in car accident). So he has no allegiance to Islam, their argument is mute.
Maybe I'm wrong about her and I'm showing my own biases, but that's how my biases work:
If she were a British immigrant (not all of them, the ones who consider themselves upper class cause they discriminate among themselves too) I would have been inclined to think : racist.
But bear in mind that she's a woman who, having grown up in the former Soviet Block and modeled in Britain and the US must have come across people who looked down their nose on her too. So this changes people a bit.
Plus the only thing good about communism is that it viewed all people as equal, and they were particularly critical of America's racism against Blacks. Cause it made Them look good.
