A couple of days ago Amazon removed all erotica from their sales rankings. When people send them questions they're getting a formula response that they'll look into it.

Knowing what I know from past dealings I imagine most of their staff has no idea this was going to happen, why it is and are told not to say anything.

What I'm hearing is that because when people use kindle unlimited and put their book for free many are getting a lot of downloads and enough to put their embarrassing smutty e-book high in the rankings leading to more visibility and more attention.

Including attention from the usual moral majority prudes who complain of such things.

Amazon has in the past taken away many things from erotica that other genres enjoy as visibility enhancers. They have also continued to screw with algorithms and rotate visibility. I, like many authors, see this pattern. A glut of sales followed by days that are tumbleweeds, then a burst of sales.

Now the question is, does this stop at the rankings? Its another way to try and pretend that kindle erotica is that step child they hate having in their house, but don't want to ban completely and still want to make some money on and just want to make it even harder to find?

Or is this step one in a final phase out?

No one knows, nor will they ever. Amazon does things with no explanations and of course except for writers and readers of erotica who will complain and of those most don't want to publicly admit they write read and go on a crusade about it.

Another cause of this-from one person and keep in mind everyone is guessing or getting bits and pieces-is the usual suspects. Idiot authors who continue to use graphic profane titles and images that amazon should kick out, but they let everything through then when there is a complaint they act like its the authors fault and pretend it should have never been there(in other words what Lit does with their make believe rules)

What can be done? Nothing...except.

FFS stop using kindle unlimited and being exclusive with Amazon. Put your stuff on Smashwords which is 100% indy owned, operated, focused on and driven by. There are sites like Kitts Excitia(I think that's it) and Carnal PLeasures and There are countless Euro sites and sites around the world to sell erotica in e-form and a lot of them have less content rules than amazon.

Find these sites(I can provide links and info if anyone wants to PM me) and get your work on there and? Advertise it. Whatever marketing you use, stop making amazon the only link you post, push these sites.

Push them not only to turn erotica fans on to your work in other venues, but so that if amazon finally goes full Mike Pence(and don't think for a second the current bible thumping VP is not gearing up for a full out crusade on porn in all its forms) people who want to buy erotica will know where to find it and you.

Amazon saw a big boost in erotica sales when Barnes and Nobles new family values CEO had the stroke of genius to ban many forms of erotica last September which considering the fact they're on death's door as it is what a moronic move. That boost in sales and subsequent rank increases may also be a factor.

Posted this so people know what's going on and offering some suggestions as a courtesy to other authors. If you choose to continue to put all your eggs in the amazon basket you're setting yourself up for a big fall as well as continuing to help a venue that hates you and only has you on there because they may fear wide spread negative publicity if they did an all out ban so the plan, as it has been for years, is to squeeze indy erotica out. I'm sure indy material in general will follow. Bezos is well aware King and Rice and Martin all need that money those pesky indys take from them:rolleyes:

My feelings on dealing with Amazon have been, fuck Amazon. Fuck the way they work, fuck the way they pay, fuck the way they attempt to control the entire market, fuck the way they fuck the authors, fuck the platform, fuck their puritanism, fuck their algorithm, and fuck the high and mighty horse they rode in on.

Pretty much sums it up. I deleted my Amazon account a year or so ago after they removed all my book reviews (under my real name) for politically incorrect reviews. That was a year or so after they removed my ability to comment for leaving the same comments on a number of spam reviews. They never did remove the spam reviews or the ripoff books they were reviews off. Trouble is they have a big chunk of the market.

They think we have a new master, Jason. That's why I don't buy anything from them. I'll pay extra from a local vendor. I've not yet reached old curmudgeon status, but the "new world order" doesn't set well with me.

Got it in one. I avoid Amazon or any company connected with them. Used to buy from the Book Depositary who were good but them Amazon bought them so I kissed them goodbye. Now I mostly buy pre-loved books from thrift books or abe books. Or local book stores.

I'm a devout atheist, but bless you Chloe, nonetheless. I find our lives forced into fewer and fewer choices. I can't accept that. Potential same day delivery is not something I need to survive, at the risk of my continued servitude.

Some time ago Amazon started including comparative ratings by categories and genres, which provide a more realistic comparison than one, across-the-board ranking, I think. They have dropped the across-the-board ranking for erotica but kept the category/genres rankings, so I'm not upset. Also, Amazon is only one of seven point-of-sale stores my works are on--and still provides more than its share of sales--so I'm not going to complain about that either.

I used to make money on Amazon, now it dribbles in from them. Might be time to just pull my stuff from there. I make more money now via Smashwords.

It's all relative. Twenty years ago--before the print-on-demand era had taken hold, before e-booking, and before online bookstores like Amazon existed, the publishing and distribution system for erotica was practically nonexistent. There was no money to be made in it at all and the niches of erotica that could make it into book form at all were very restricted.

Amazon is a big part of erotica being available at all. It's not really a choice between distributing at Smashwords or Amazon (if you don't suck into Amazon's exclusive programs) or B&N or several other online bookstores. As long as there's anything to be made from Amazon, I see no reason to desert them. As I noted, my books sell on seven platforms as e-books. But they sell in paperback (when they have enough words to do so) only at Amazon and B&N, and without the Amazon system, they wouldn't be made into paperbacks at all.

It's all relative. I caught the first wave of both print-on-demand and e-booking (but not with erotica)--which happened as early at the late 1990s. Erotica publishing options were nearly zero less than twenty years ago. There's a whole hell of a lot possible in erotica publishing now even with Amazon and any other distributor limiting it. It does take a lot of effort to keep up with formatting for the requirements of multiple platforms. That's why I have publishers to do that work. If you can't get a publisher, it's questionable why you are populating the offerings at all, but it's still a real plus for you that you can choose to do that. Twenty years ago you didn't have a choice to do it without a publisher and there were virtually no erotica publishers.

Amazon is showing overall Best-Seller ranking statistics on erotica works again--at least it's doing so for mine.

They've been on and off. There were none when I first posted. Then it was showing just for erotica. Today I have over all rankings, but as of yesterday I hadn't.

TBH I think just having the books show in erotica fiction rankings only and not overall and general isn't a bad idea.

A lot of previous amazon witch hunts have started by people bitching they see erotica while looking for romance or sci fi or whatever so maybe having it in their own rankings only is a benefit as in it only affects those looking for erotica.

Because of course an adult kindle store with a separate log in and password that would solve all these problems is out of the question.

But what they're actually doing and why will remain a mystery as they're never forthcoming and after years of games and BS I tend to feel that any time they're messing with something the end result is never good.
