My cuz was looking over my shoulder and she asked me if anyone has ever started a thread where the favourite characters of our stories ever interacted in a group setting.

And what occurred to me is that there might be some merit in that. If you're one of those people who worries that your character is not believable, and seems scripted (go figure), then having them converse with others in what is essentially an improv environment they need to respond to can be very helpful.

Clever kid, my cuz.

I posted this here, because we're the authors and I'm pondering it as a developmental exercise. I have a few characters who could use some elasticizing.

What do y'all think?

Depends, is this going to be a naked cafe? If so I don't think any of my characters would participate unless they were drunk, possibly.

I do like the idea though, and I suggest everybody provides brief character descriptions so we have more than just a name and possibly gender/biological sex. I might also use a few characters who I haven't written into stories here.

I've got a couple of characters where other authors have said, "Hey, can I use him or her in one of my stories?" Likewise, I've borrowed some of theirs.

That's a good test in my mind - can a character move from my world to someone else's? Same idea as yours, as a credibility test.

Hrrmm... I have enough trouble getting my favorite characters out of my head once their story is over. I fear something like this would just encourage them to hang around and distract me from new characters I am trying to write. Nevertheless, the idea intrigues me, and I'd probably give it a shot.

My character are a bunch of real people in RL somewhere, I will not mention where they are or who they might be, but if you want, I know exactly how they would respond to almost any situation or questions or exclamations.

Of course I'm not always around much.

First of all
What? I think you lost me somewhere.
Are you saying/asking, that maybe we should have a chat and us be one of our characters?

Second
I agree with Ruben. My characters are me basically. Mara especially is me. Or some part of me.

And lastly
I read your title as Vicarious...so I thought OMG I love that Tool song. I actually had just put it on before I came here.

I have enough problems keeping me straight, much less my characters.

There's a roleplay board on here somewhere.

Edit: I hope your cousin isn't a kid and sure, it was 'their' idea while looking over your shoulder. ;)

I considered this as a character-building exercise, for people who thought one of their characters could benefit from improv interacting. I avoided the roleplay boards for this on purpose. Not conducive to what I was positing.

As for my cuz, she's 19, and yeah, it really was her suggestion.

She reads your stories as well? Is she a critic of yours?

She does indeed read my stories, mostly because I have no means of stopping her. To that end, though, she's my Lit profile manager. She submits my stories when they're ready and she (rather fanatically) monitors my comments section on my stories, weeding out the useless troll flames. They don't bother me much, but she takes extreme exception to them and deletes them with extreme prejudice.

Watching her and my gf together is ridiculous. Especially if they find my absinthe... :/

In a way that's seriously disturbing for people who have anything against that kind of thing, but I think it's kind of hilarious. You writing I/T stories, your cousin reading them and being your story-manager. It would so make a fun I/T story by itself. Kind of reminds me of that story about a lit writer actually meeting his editor to do some research if a scene would work.

Then again, with she being your profile manager and reading your work, she might take offense in you not actually having written that yet :D Or would that make things too uncomfortable and close to home?

[edit: I really should cut back on my smileys when I'm having too much fun with an idea]

Chances are, some questions are just left unanswered, from her tender pov.

I'd be interested, not so much for character believability (right or wrong I don't see that as a big problem) but to practice the use of realistic English. It would, of course, depend on how it's to be done.

That, you could achieve by writing a story and offering it up to an editor as well. (s)he would tell you what works and what doesn't, too.

But getting to grasp realistic English? Practice makes perfect, they say. Keep reading, keep watching tv, that way you subconsciously get a grasp on how people say things and when they say such things. Of course, it does depend on what you read/watch :)
