Don't know where else to put this. So, I'm sorry about that. Here goes, what I'm wanting to know is why am I logged-in here (forums) but not when I want to place a comment on a story. At the end of a story/chapter when I try to comment I have to log-in. Then my log-in credentials don't work.

On the second page login, lit will never log you out if you login there first.

That would be the top of the Story & Pictures item on the first page.

Lit is really two halves.

You can be logged in on one side, and not on the other.

This is just speculation, but I don't think that the forum and story software are linked at all.

The forums use vbulletin, which is the most popular forum software in use. It's customizable, but not very fluid.

I have a feeling that the story software was custom built and there's no integration between the two.

You are correct.

As for the story side being custom built, it was more a matter of throwing stuff on the wall and use what sticks. It was generated from scratch by several dozen different coders using who only knows what code, who are either gone or dead by the time they decided to update the place. A great big house of cards sitting on a monstrous data base.

And people wonder why things don't work and why they don't fix them. Pull the wrong thread and Lit comes crashing down.

I'll vouch for two halves. If I log in to the story side, check my stories/comments etc, then come here for a while and eventually log out here, I'm not logged out on the story side. Even if I close the window on the forum side, when I come back the next day I'll still be logged in on the story side.

Sort of off topic
I can never stay logged in here in the forums. Every time I want to comment or do anything I have to log back in even though I click the remember me box. It's frustrating and why I don't post or comment much, and why I never know I have an pm unless I log in which I rarely do.

That's odd, I seldom post here, but I remain logged in even if its been a week or more since i've been to the forum.

I also stay logged in on the story side, but not on my tablet (I have to logout and back in to see favorites and so on). Not a problem, so i haven't worried about 'fixing' it.

This happens to when I‘m on my Mac using private surfing and open threads in new tabs. It doesn‘t happen when I just click the theead or on the Windows machine.

The way it seems to work (and this changed in the last year) is that if you are logged into the story side then you are automatically logged in when you visit the forums.

I've always thought that if I'm logged into the story site and haven't visited the forum, or have logged out of the forum, I shouldn't be shown on the forum as being active or logged in. That's hard to check because it looks like you have to visit the forum from a different URL or it will just log you in.

I logged out of the forum while staying logged into the story site and visited the forum on my cell phone using the data plan, not the wireless--which would have given my phone the same URL as my computer. From my phone, the forum does not show me as active or logged in.

Also, if you log out of the story site while you're logged into the forum you will remain logged into the forum. You have to specifically log out of the forum or it will continue to show you as logged in and active.

On my main machine, a Windoze laptop, I mainly use the Mozilla Seamonkey browser because who'd bother to hack it? And I'm on the Opera browser with its built-in quasi-VPN for 'sensitive' webwork including the four LIT tabs I always leave open, two on the forum side, two on the story side. To hide my sins, I merely close Opera. On restart, I'm (usually) automatically logged into both sides of LIT. No problem.

Logout? Why bother? I'm either on or off. Or elsewhere.

Being as I misspent a chunk of time teaching people to build and maintain databases, that totally made me shiver just imagining. And, I can imagine. All too well. Cobbling together disparate codes. And the one person who knew where the glue was to get the COBOL/Pascal/Unix/DOS 4.2/BASIC matrix is gone.

Ugh! Gonna have trouble sleeping tonight. And about the next seven. Thanks for that TX.

(And before anyone asks me any questions if you aren't using punch cards, can't help you. Well... maybe DOS 5.0 or earlier. If you are using any of that, you need to modernize.)

I log in on the story side and never logout...I have now been logged in for 4-5 months. ON BOTH SIDES.

See, I went on past DOS 5 to Windoz 95 and 98 then Professional 2000 for the front end. We coded in Powerbuilder and Oracle Stored Procedures/Packages using PL/SQL for the back end.

Over a 1,000,000 lines of code between the 2.

Now that you mention it, I've recently started using a Mac, after a 6 year old windows machine bit the dust, well actually it tried to swallow a full cup of tea. My fault.

But I never noticed the story side staying logged in after logging out and shutting down the forum side with my window machine. It definitely. happens with my Mac.

Maybe it's just a Mac thing.

I suppose Ogg and I will bore y'all, gassing about Ye Olde Days with magnetic drum memory and sparking relays. Meanwhile, punch cards:

Q: How can you identify a computer programmer?
A: They wear many rubber bands around a wrist.

Q: How can you identify a professional programmer?
A: They wrap the card deck with TWO rubber bands.

Have the threadjackers escaped yet?

I'm using a windows laptop and am on chrome.
Had to log in to post this. It's just frustrating. I stay logged in on the story side always, it's just here in the forums.

I had no idea this was an issue. I use Chrome and always am logged in for both, although sometimes it takes a moment for the login page to update. Then I can enter either the stories or forums without having to do anything to log in.

I noticed when I came back here that I cannot log out of the forum. I log out and the next time I come back I'm logged in.

I even tried logging in as that stupid alt I created to make fun of scouries and when I came back I'm logged back into this account.

I do seem to able to log out on my phone however, but not my lap top.

Maybe that's why it looks like lit has so much traffic everyone is logged in whether they're hear or not.

I wonder if this has something to do with cookies. If you log out but Lit has installed a cookie on your system perhaps you get logged in after visiting the login page automatically. You might try logging out and deleting any cookies and seeing what happens. My guess is you won't get logged in then.

That might also explain why different people have different experiences. Some may have set their computers up to block cookies.

Agree. I regularly purge my browsing history, and the purge deletes all cookies. Need to log in again the next day - a single log-in though, both story side and forum side.
