Yeah, real surprising by this state . It's a crying shame that kids are getting a real lesson on who is valued by those in authority. Is peaceful protest not a constitutional right? This should have been a teachable moment for kids to feel empowered and part of the process, not to leave them to feel powerless and disrespected.

Students across the country are joining the survivors of the shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in demanding that lawmakers take action to prevent mass shootings, but one Texas school district is warning students that participating in protests will result in suspension.

Curtis Rhodes, the superintendent for the Needville Independent School District, said he was aware "there is a 'movement' attempting to stage walkouts/disruptions of the school" and he threatened that students who participate in "any type of protest or awareness" will be suspended for three days.

'Never again!': Florida shooting survivors confront lawmakers; protests gain steam nationwide

"Life is all about choices and every choice has a consequence whether it be positive or negative. We will discipline no matter if it is one, fifty, or five hundred students involved," Rhodes said in a statement.

"A school is a place to learn and grow educationally, emotionally and morally. A disruption of the school will not be tolerated," Rhodes added. "Respect yourself, your fellow students and the Needville Independent School District and please understand that we are here for an education and not a political protest."

The position of the Needville school district, about 40 miles southwest of Houston, contrasts with other schools that have encouraged student action.

For example, Jacquelin Collins, superintendent of Florida's Cape Coral charter school system said, "I support it 100%” after 200 students at Oasis High School walked out demanding greater security.

“I’m glad they had the gumption to get up and speak, and I’m very proud of them," Collins said.

There are three national protests planned in the coming months to demand gun control legislation. The organizers of the Women's March on Washington have called for a nationwide school walkout on March 14 and a march in Washington is planned for March 24.

Another nationwide walkout is planned for April 20, the 19th anniversary of the shooting at Columbine High School in Littleton, Colo.

Why don't you support public education?

The state needs to do what it does best and send the cops in to beat these little fuckers right back into their seats so the ISD can get it's funding.

I'm 100% in support of their protest...and 100% okay with the punishment of suspension.

It'll be an invaluable lesson about the consequences of not following rules, questioning those rules, becoming suspect of the people who make them, and then action to challenge those people.

You do not get the full experience of what it means to protest in this country unless you're risking someting.

In 2020, these kids will vote. And if they are treated like less than they are...they will be a force. Too bad republicans can't figure it out

You let the kids have their say. They will go back to school...but no...force them to do as I say mentality...

Good for the supervisor. The fucking inmates don't run the asylum, time that they learn that.

Apparently not in Texas.

This. 100%.

Still an awful idea to suspend them. No where else is the consequence for breaking rules the same as the benefit.

Fascism 101: Brownshirts like Ishmael ^^^ support "Good Germans" like Schulefuehrer Rhodes for maintaining Order.

Vee must haf ORDER!

Not showing up and suffering no consequences is the same as having a suspension on your *permanent record*?

Yeah, he wants to suspend them, then have their futures ruined, because let's face it, most colleges look at a high school student's disciplinary records. Furthermore, most lucrative careers require at least a college degree in these modern times.

A high school suspension on the record would hurt a kid's future.

Typical vindictive and malicious repug politician.

As a parent I'd stand behind my kids 100% if they protested. They aren't inmates you fucking moron, they're our next generation and should be protected. As far as they can tell that isn't happening, we are not doing our job. They are demanding the protection they deserve as they should.

Comshaw

LOL well then given all the students out there who are protesting, these school districts that are threatening students might as well close down.

These threats are a great way to turn a protest of thousands, into a protest of millions...

i can get with this man and its hard to think of a better way for both sides to get what they want.

You're an idiot and a drama queen.

These kids have every right to protest. How many more shootings will it take for someone to demand a little bit of peace in this country?

a high school suspension and a well written essay on why students should have the right to protest would actually help get a kid into a liberal college.

You have plenty of peace in this country. In fact, I'd argue too much. We are bombing civilians in 4 countries (that we know of) right now. Those people don't get any peace, but I don't see people out there protesting it.

Our peace comes at the expense of other people's misery.

Great answer.
