Repentance is simple, but difficult. It offends one's pride. It interferes with one's natural inclinations.

Free associating here but I'm liking that word inclination because of its root. To incline conotes lazing away life to me.

Where I was going with this is I rarely hear repentance mentioned. I thought perhaps the idea had passed from favor. Historically, I think of it as foremost of the topics for itinerant preachers.

I come from a background that encourage is proselytizing. Often when people were discussing hi there specific individuals are groups of people that might be receptive to proselytizing I often thought they got it wrong. "So and so is already fairly pious, they'd make a great Christian!" Those people didn't stand to benefit a lot from hearing the gospel in the sense that it wouldn't have a particularly dramatic effect on their life because they're already living most of those principles.

Conversely, those with the least pious lifestyles stand to gain the most dramatic relief as they shrug off the shackles of habits and practices that are self-defeating. The trick is in convincing them that those inclinations are, in fact, self-defeating.

I'm a fan of puritanical ideas about working ones way to Salvation. The challenge that presents for me personally though is that I tend to want to be self-congratulatory about progress, and surly and resentfull about setbacks thrust upon me. I often joke that when things go well, I feel clever, when they don't I feel unfortunate. Those two paradigms are not compatible.

Discovery of ancient church linked to early Christians in Turkey

http://www.wnd.com/2018/02/discover...rly-christians-in-turkey/#xJhtwGJqxR3gKdFZ.99

The reference in the article to a bull over plants may indicate that this was a building taken over from pagan worship by the 5th century Greek christians. Zeus was often depicted as a bull (fertility symbol) and the plants as the symbolic fruits of his potency. CF with the myth of Zeus and Europa.

After Christianity became the official religion with Constantine post 325 AD a lot of Pagan temples became places of Christian worship ( The Pantheon in Rome being the most famous example). In the 300 years prior to 325 few Christian churches show that change. The very early churches tend to be small and show no signs of prior pagan usage.

I do not understand how any one can possibly work ones way to Salvation.

The Bible says that you cannot work your way to salvation. Jesus Christ completed the work of salvation on the cross and if it were possible to work your way to salvation, then Jesus Christ, the Son of God died in vain.

Ga 2:21 I do not frustrate the grace of God: for if righteousness come by the law, then Christ is dead in vain.

:D

Funny, I had to tell Joel Osteen the very same thing: If I wish any actual substance from you, I'll nail you to a X upside down and wait for it to drip out, tyvm.

BTW: how 'bout your fellow wannabe, former preacher pimp, Joel? You see where he's obviously drained all the multi-millions he could before being exposed for the total Jesus fraud he is, and is now joining his dear wife pimping a face cream empire because his god or something told him it really, really helps to get rid of skin cancer?

Why do I see a fleet of 2-3 ice cream trucks in your future?

Why are you assuming that I am a fan of Joel Osteen? I am not. I don't agree with that "Prosperity Gospel" that he preaches. I think it's false and unbiblical. Only the Jews were promise financial prosperity. Isn't it interesting that the Jews are some of the richest most powerful people in the world in comparison to the population? They make up a low percentage of population and a very high percentage of the rich and successful. Christians are only promised to have their physical needs met here on earth. The reason is because the Jews are an earthly people and will inherit the earth one day. The Christians are a heavenly people and will live in heaven one day.

Well, at least the Jews will get something that exists.

As far as I recall, the Bible only actually references that English translation of the Greek word a few times. And, of course, the Antiochenes - who created the nickname - spoke their own dialect of Aramaic, not Greek, so that's not what they tagged Saul and Barnabas at all.

It does nothing but reek of sinful arrogance to pontificate to the point of capitalization, and attribute so much to a word the Word of God itself does not attend to anywhere close to how much so many bozos love to do.

How come "Christians" never talk about the murder and conniving conspiracy among their "Church" founders that occurred 24/7 as their Roman state religion "Christianity" was being so sinisterly framed for pimping to the masses?

Many estimate the Nazarene spent 3 years evangeling. Some say there was a 10-year span between the Cross (30AD), and when Barnabas and Saul were nicknamed in Antioch (39-40AD). So, that's 13 years of the most fundamental foundation of his good news, 13 years during which he gathered his disciples, 13 years the entire enchilada grew from...

And the words "Christian", "Christians" and "Christianity" had absolutely no relevance at all to any of it.

Huh.

We talk about it sometimes. It went on for centuries.

By Nazarene I take it you are referring to Christ? Yes I believe it was 3 to 3 1/2 years. I have heard that Saul came 6 years after the crucifixion, but I am not for sure. What are you getting at?

The Christians are those who follow the teachings of Christ and believe that He is the Christ. It is referenced in the Bible even when they were first called Christians.

Huh.

Hugh what?

Thank you, Joel Xtralite: I surely wouldn't have been able to finger that out without more of your wannabe divine revelation.

Why do bozos like you spend a billion more of your words pontificating about what the Word of God says than actually employing His relatively few words, allowing Him to speak fully for Himself?

You're like a little Roman Catholic Church-issued USB.

Ash Wednesday today, when every Christian sect reminds their flock that they came from dust, and to dust they shall return.

Must be awfully dusty in Heaven.

Frederick Temple and Evolution.

Frederick Temple, scholar, an evangelical churchman and later an Episcopalian Bishop and later still Archbishop lectured in 1860 on Darwins Origin of Species

Much later in 1884 he expanded it into a series of eight lectures. He stated "The doctrine of Evolution is in no way Antagonistic to the Teachings of Religion."

I read them again in the last month. Temple was right 160 years ago and is still right. I recommend his analysis to anyone.

I don't remember any of my Pastor's saying that to me on Ash Wednesday. Sounds like a Catholic thing.

Genesis 3:19 By the sweat of your brow you will eat your food until you return to the ground, since from it you were taken; for dust you are and to dust you will return.

Not a word about ascending to some cloud and being issued wings, a halo and a harp.

I think it means our bodies go back to ground. Not our spirit. We get new bodies. Good thing.

Nope. A cult is a religion that teaches salvation by any way other than through faith in Jesus Christ and His death, burial and resurrection. It's not by good deeds, church, baptism, ect.

No xfrodo, Phrodeau's definition whilst not complete is much closer to the truth.

A cult is in fact defined as "A small quaisi - religious group, frequently with a charismatic leadership, whose rituals and beliefs are outside conventional belief and practice." There are cults and break away groups in all major religions, for examples : - Sufisim in Islam, Old believers in Russian Orthodoxy, Jainism in Hinduism and of course the most famous cult of all was the Nazarene sect in Judaism led by the charismatic Yeshua Ben Joseph.

When Christianity became mainstream it developed its own cults, a modern example being the fundamentalism of various charismatic Protestant fraudsters. Billy Graham is probably the best known of these, promising future glory to all who allow the leadership to fleece them financially.

This behavior is probably the second oldest profession. The very early church was financed by widows who were persuaded to will their cash to secure their place in heaven. Later the Catholics invented Simony and the sale of offices to advance the cashflow. The Muslims had Dhimmi poll taxes. Buddhists Beg. Protestants specialise in Tithing; every religious institution constantly reinvents ways of screwing money from its membership.:)
