However, the problem is that the Republicans in leadership and their main lobbyists now find Trump to be a useful idiot. That is why they did the group suck-up thing after the tax legislation passed and why they are now trying to discredit (to some degree) the special counsel investigation.

Trump himself is so unfocused that McConnell was correct when he said that Trump would sign anything they put in front of him for a tax bill. The evangelicals are getting what they want in the appointments to the justice system. The oil and mining corporations are getting what they want with the gutting of environmental protections. The white male base is getting what they want with anti-immigration and voter suppression actions.

Trump's lack of competency alone will not be enough to push him out of office, and there are now many Republicans and big scale corporate lobbyists who want to use him as long as possible. That is why they are trying to chip away at Mueller's credibility.
