In Hollywood, and to be honest, elsewhere, even in our halls of power and industry, there emerged a culture of, let us call it, predation. But I would like to start by setting the table with this small appetizer, since among these are some of the most vocal critics of our society, relentlessly pointing out the sins they perceive those outside of their sphere guilty of. This culture was populated by good people. When the allegation dam finally broke, one common theme was that everyone knew what was going on. Even the lay person has heard of “the casting couch.”
But knowing what was going on, or being victimized, meant staying silent for fear of retaliation. Is that not so? "So the man is a pig, so he made me feel uncomfortable or that I had to engage in certain acts in order to have the career that I have always dreamed of. If I cry out, all doors will be shut to me, I will have no friends, and no social circle. To preserve their own status, those who know will stay silent.”
It would be fair to say, would it not, that all of Hollywood cannot be called sexual predators because of the actions of a minority? But how does such a minority earn silence if the cause is nothing more than the fear of retaliation? I mean, we trust that these are good people right? We cannot tarnish them because they decided to take part in the system and play (yes, pun intended) according to the Hollywood script; power has perks and the path to success is to be a perk (for a jerk).
Okay, enough of the bad comedy, this is a serious issue, not "Three’s Company” on the casting couch.
Now, I ask you, does this remind you of anything else? Any other situation where good people stay silent in order to not become a target?
My second example would be Islam where every attack is met by such institutions as our first example with a cautionary warning, “This is only a small percentage of Islam. The overwhelming majority of Muslims are good people.” Okay. They are good people, but extraordinarily silent. We in the West forget that their community suffers the brunt of the violence. In too many places, they keep their heads low to keep them on. But it is not just the Islamic world that changes its behavior in response to the violence, but large segments of the West who have been intimidated into silence or full-throated support of Islam.
Thirdly, there is the college campus where increasingly free speech is not tolerated. We have examples of speakers and students harassed and even attacked, directly, or indirectly by threat of riot. Now some would say, these are isolated instances that do not directly affect the majority of college students, and like a terror attack, does not represent the college environment. However, I say that they serve as a warning to every campus, to every student, “If you deviate from the group consensus, you will be purged, you will be hounded, you will not be safe on campus and you will be eviscerated on social media and the pseudo-media of Salon, Slate, MSNBC, CNN, the Times, the WaPo and so on.” So good people are silenced and good people stay silent in order not to be subjected to the wrath of those with whom they basically agree with philosophically if not tactically.
In the black community, the majority are good people who just want to live their lives in a polite society, but those who we hear from the most are the loud ones, the angry ones, the ones not afraid to threaten the non-black community with violence, again, either directly, or indirectly by creating an atmosphere where low class black communities will destroy themselves by riot and be joined by our first example (and the news media and the political class) in blaming white privilege. Good people stay silent, because they will be turned upon as Uncle Toms, or if they are white, as racists. Again, social media is a vehicle in this threat.
Here, on this forum, the voices of good Liberals have gone silent, departed, or created safe spaces for themselves which leaves our viewpoint to those who don’t care to listen and discuss alternative viewpoints to Progressivism. Instead they seek to bully using the targeting of identifying, isolating and ridiculing their targets. They poison the forum and become the face of “Liberalism.” We let them because we agree with their philosophy, even if not their tactics, but once they take over, a status they are close to realizing, then this place will fail because good people failed to speak up.
As the Reverend Niemöller pointed out [para], “All that the Nazis needed was for me to go silent as they targeted and isolated their enemies one by one." In the end, silence just makes you a victim saved for last. If we do not save Liberalism from the Progressive “terrorists” then we will eventually be reduced to living in fear and poverty because only those who got in on the ground floor will enjoy the benefits of the world they are seeking to create. This would be a good place to start, for when they “win” here and run off all opposition, they will become emboldened to find a new target.
