Twitter Slapped as FCC Chief Takes a Swipe at Silicon Valley

Federal Communications Commission Chairman Ajit Pai, responding to criticism from Silicon Valley of his proposed rollback of open-internet regulations, criticized Twitter Inc. and other companies, calling them a greater threat to web freedom than the broadband providers the rules were designed to restrict.

“When it comes to an open internet, Twitter is part of the problem” because it discriminates against some messages or messengers, Pai said in his speech in Washington on Tuesday defending his proposal to gut Obama-era net neutrality rules.

...Pai went on to indict what he calls “edge providers” -- a term the FCC has used to encompass Google, Facebook, YouTube, Netflix Inc. and Microsoft Corp.’s LinkedIn -- as “a much bigger actual threat to an open internet than broadband providers, especially when it comes to discrimination on the basis of viewpoint.”

Pai said Twitter had unfairly blocked a political campaign ad “because if featured a pro-life message” and had warned users that a link to a statement by one company on the topic of internet regulation “may be unsafe.”

“The company appears to have a double standard when it comes to suspending or de-verifying conservative users’ accounts as opposed to those of liberal users,” Pai said in a speech sponsored by the policy groups R Street Institute, based in Washington, and San Francisco-based Lincoln Network. “This conduct is many things, but it isn’t fighting for an open internet.”

Uh huh.

Good thing about the FCC getting out of total statist government Internet regulation is that maybe now the FTC will start slapping other website owners who just as falsely advertise "Free Speech" and actually, intentionally stifle it.

I think the government should have a light hand on the internet as far as regulation goes. That being said yeah if your gonna tout that your free speech then they should be made to practice what they preach. Free Speech is a high bar and if your going to claim that, you better dam well be doing it, otherwise you're just another partisan hack site trying to skate on fake credentials.

Pai's got his panties in a bunch because people are upset with him over his hateful acts. Some kids at his kid's school are apparently taking it to to them and he doesn't like his family getting taken to task for his bad acts.

Hopefully he'll be prosecuted along with the rest or the 'Rump Klan someday.

Poor eeyore the whiner.

P’raps he and Ish can go start their own Free Speech website, a happy place with no child-boss, where they can spout off all day about the 2nd, know-it-all bitches and abortions, and those pesky coloureds and Muslims.

You get how silly it sounds to rail against government and immediately look to a different government organization to intervene, right?

Eyesore still hasn't figured out the difference in the Constitution prohibiting the government's suppression of free speech and the total irrelevant application of the Constitution serving to restrict individual citizens suppressing speech in their homes, property (most particularly net domains) and among their employees as a condition of employment -- regardless of how inaccurately they may otherwise represent themselves.

Pai can "criticize" all he wants, but the FCC has little authority over the internet. And the only thing the FTC is going to slap is anyone discriminating against a "protected class" in the conduct of public commerce. They're not going to do shit about the content of otherwise completely legal terms of service.

Will Team.Tromp force the private businesses called “edge providers” -- a term the FCC has used to encompass Google, Facebook, YouTube, Netflix Inc. and Microsoft Corp.’s LinkedIn to promote hate speech?

Does it matter if he actually does or not?

You'll accuse him of it anyhow.

Is it wrong for a private company to remove ads that are patently false?
Marsha Blackburn’s Senate campaign announcement video has been blocked by Twitter because she mentions her committee’s work in stopping Planned Parenthood’s sale of aborted baby parts.
PP was never selling "aborted baby parts".

After multiple investigations in multiple states and much taxpayer money spent, the only evidence is a doctored Project "Veritas" video.

Why would anyone believe Pai about anything when he claims most people want to regulations overturned when research has clearly shown the vast majority want them retained?

Yes or No will suffice nicely. Thank you.

The only thing that should be shutdown here is you.

I wrote two essays on Free Speech for a Literotica Contest:

https://www.literotica.com/s/free-speech-the-acid-test

https://www.literotica.com/s/free-speech-is-offensive

There are set limits on what is allowed as Free Speech on Literotica. They are generous in what is permitted. If you are using Literotica you should respect the rules of the site.

If not? It isn't that your free speech is curtailed but that you are breaking the rules that you signed up to when you joined. Don't like the way Literotica is run? You are free to leave.

Laurel has let Eeyore come crawling back, begging for another chance dozens of times. He always fucks up and gets banned again, and then returns to bite the hand that feeds him.

There are limits to "free speech". Just as you can't go into a theater and yell "FIRE" you can't go into a site and tell them they have to have topics that will get them shut down.

So if you want to discuss "those" topics, go to a site that will permit it. Otherwise, FUCK OFF EYER!!!

In many countries of the world if the abuse of US politicians that is posted on Lit's General Board were to be posted about their leaders?

You could be sent to jail for life or even executed.

If you work for a commercial organisation and posted abuse of the owners like the abuse that is constantly directed at Laurel and Manu - your employment would be terminated for cause.

Yet those who abuse Laurel and Literotica's rules continually return. I would expect new alts of banned posters to be banned instantly instead of being allowed to continue the abuse.

Tell you what, if I suspect Twitter of stifling free speech, I'm not going to pay another cent of their subscription fee.
