So I need a new one. It's hooked up to my TV and I use it for my cable box and Blue Tooth box. It's a surround sound receiver, but I can't use it like that. I have an old lady living next to me and she pounds on the wall if she hears even a peep from my unit  So I want a high quality unit to run two speakers (stereo) . But every stereo only units I find are cheap. Are their any high quality stereo only units out there?

Pawn shop. A lot of good stereo pieces can be found.

Thrift stores lately. I'm finding equipment from the 90s that cost $1,000 new for $10-$15.

Couple years ago I bought a Dolby Surround Sound unit for 45 bucks.

Why not try a Wave radio?

If you got a 4k tv and other devices that are 4k like the PS4 Pro or if you plan to move in the future, you might as well future-proof your setup by getting a receiver that can handle 4k as well. Those 4k sources will be going through the receiver and then out to your tv with a single HDMI cable.

Then get a nice set of headphones that you can plug into your receiver so you don't piss off all the other tenants in the building. If or when you get your own place, you can splurge on the speakers for a 5.1 set up or greater.

Well, this Yamaha is the one I am looking at. My knowledge of receivers is limited. I just want something that sounds nice at low volume and is easy to set up. I don't think a high end stereo only unit exists.

If you're going to spend that kind of money on a receiver, take Sixty-Nine's advice and spring for some decent headphones. That will make it sound nice at ANY volume -- and which you deserve and aren't going to hear at substantially low volumes otherwise.

High quality 2 channel exists. Trust me.

Try searching for a preamp and amp combination. They are physically separate, not combined in one case as your receiver was. Many audio purists just want a volume control and ability to select the source on the preamp. Buttons and doodads add noise. Noise is for losers.

My batting average of "hooking up" to "hooking up electronics" was way below 0.300, but it never discouraged me, and afterall, there were those few times it worked...

Hey GiaCat, do you need any help hooking up the new receiver?

Not unless you have a nice tight end.

I have to agree with Not Normal and Que, perusing thrift stores and pawn shops can yield some pretty incredible audio equipment at sometimes shockingly low prices. If you run across Yamaha and Onkyo units, you're looking at GOOD stereo and surround sound systems.

Also second the headphone recommendation. Any of the Sony monitor series headphones, for example, will make anything from a little cheapo MP3 player to a component system, sound VERY good. A good audio system, through crappy speakers, is about the same as a crappy audio system. High quality speakers are always recommended, however in a situation where you need to keep sound levels down, high quality headphones are the ticket.

All good advice. I'm kind of partial to Yamaha, Onkyo, Pioneer, and Sony components.

Very good advice from all responders. A headset is a must. I have Sony MDR 7506 and Sennheiser HD 595 which I use when listening to music on my Mac Book Pro. I can have the volume as high as I want it and no moving air enters my room. I also don't need to wear my hearing aids when I'm using the headsets.

This is the one I ended up getting. It has a bunch of stuff I will never use. But it's $150 off and is a more premium model. Thanks everyone for your advice. :)

Good choice! You really can't go wrong with Sony audio, and it's a nice price. You may well eventually use some of the features, so you're ahead of the game really...sort of "future proofed" yourself in your purchase, and that's always a good thing when it comes to electronics.
