I've never understood cooking for 5+ hours only to have it scarfed down in 30 minutes so everyone can watch "The Game".

J and I will usually do a special steak with a shrimp cocktail appetizer or surf and turf that day. Although I do have to confess to breaking down and making a pecan pie from scratch using mom's pie crust recipe and grandma's pie recipe. I won't lose that tradition even if it is just the two of us.

Just two pieces of advice:

Spring for the best turkey you can afford and remember to take the crap out of the inside before placing it in the oven.

Thanksgiving seems wrong to me on so many levels. Standing Rock brought it out in bold relief for me last year.

A funny turkey story would be better than a sad or horrific one. Make sure the smoke alarms have fresh batteries.

For 23 years our Thanksgivings were spent at Daytona Speedway and lots of street rod cruise ins around the area. We'd have our Turkey at a nearby Denny's. Fitting since my name is Denny.
As far back as I can remember Thanksgivings before that were with grandparents and family members. Those were great times.
Last Thanksgiving was spent with our three kids and families at our daughter's new home. Most likely this Thanksgiving will be with the three kids and families again at one of their homes.
I'd rather be at Denny's in Daytona!

First time I made chicken soup in the USA, I had no idea about the "paper bag with giblets" thing. I was boiling the chicken: "wtf why are there cardboard bits floating in my soup?"

It's my understanding the bits and parts being left in is the most common mistake when cooking a store-bought bird.
