It's a different conception of ownership when you have such stability. There are hundreds of families here who have been in the same house and land for several hundred years. That attitude trickles down. A sense of stewardship, not ownership; of looking after something for the next generation, as Patek Phillipe has it. Note the difference between the way the Vanderbilts built their palaces, for show, for immediate impact, and the decaying old piles of much of ancient England.

We aren't pioneers here. We sent all our Daniel Boones across the ocean. We are guardians. And small c conservatives. When something has lasted 1,000 years, the odds of a change making it better diminish to almost nothing. When you have space, you take risks; when you are crowded, you move carefully and tuck your elbows in. In some ways we have more in common with Japan than the US.

I understand what you are saying. I feel that way about my cottage, which I built myself and the property inherited from my father's side of the family, which has been in the family since about 1860. They will be passed down, not sold.

My city house on the other hand is just a house.

“I had forgotten,” he said, a moment later.

“Forgotten what?” His back was warm through the thin shirt.

“Everything.” He spoke very softly, mouth against my hair. “Joy. Fear. Fear, most of all.” His hand came up and smoothed my curls away from his nose.

“I havena been afraid for a verra long time, Sassenach,” he whispered. “But now I think I am. For there is something to be lost, now.”

Fuck that. I am not living my life for the next generation or the twelve before me. Make your own money and your own way. Living in the basement until Granny dies and leaves the place to you is a life half wasted.

A theist might say that still, small place of calm between competing extremes is where God dwells.

A theist might. An atheist would not. However, I am neither.

The irony is there are far too many that use their God to justify their extremism. If their God does indeed exist, it would not be pleased.
