Ukraine intelligence officer killed by car bomb in Kiev

A Ukrainian military intelligence officer was killed by a bomb under his car while he was driving through the country's capital, Kiev, officials say.

The victim has been named as Col Maxim Shapoval. His car was destroyed and two passers-by were slightly injured.

Officials said the incident was a "terrorist act".

No motive has been suggested but analysts say it may be connected to the Russian-backed insurgency in eastern Ukraine.

Ukrainian firms, including the state power company and Kiev's main airport were among the first to report issues.


In March, former Russian MP Denis Voronenkov, a critic of President Vladimir Putin, was shot dead outside a hotel.


And last July, a prominent investigative Belarusian journalist and also a Kremlin critic, Pavel Sheremet, was killed by a bomb in his car in the capital.

According to the defence ministry, Shapoval was a colonel in military intelligence. The Ukrainian Pravda newspaper quoted law enforcement sources saying he had headed a special forces unit.

Yury Butusov, editor of the Censor.net news website, said in a Facebook post that Shapoval’s unit had fought in eastern Ukraine, where a conflict with Russia-backed separatists that broke out in 2014 has killed more than 10,000 people. He claimed Russian intelligence could have killed Shapoval.

With the overthrow of the Tsar the communists instituted a criminal organization. Trotsky understood that, fled, and was assassinated anyway. Stalin consolidated and codified the means of 'doing business.' Millions died at his hands.

The Soviet Empire fell and chaos ensued. Having no basis for rule by law every criminal cabal attempted to carve out their own little empires, Soviet rule gave way to criminal anarchy.

Putin came to power and brought order to the various criminal enterprises. Organized crime if you will. He did so with a heavy hand out of necessity. Putin was elected by the people of Russia out of their desire to have order restored from chaos. He did that, not exactly as we in the west would desire, but we aren't Russian.

Putin too will pass and what the Russian 'Republic' evolves into is up for grabs right now. There is no obvious successor to Putin, a failing on his part. You just can't murder every critic and up and comer without creating a vacuum of power that necessarily leads to another round of chaos. Obviously Putin is no student of history. Or maybe he just doesn't care.
