The Gun Violence Archive has been cataloging mass shootings in the United States since 2013 seeking to produce more accurate reporting than was publicly available. Thus far there have 273 mass shootings, defined as incidents where four people, not including the shooter, are injured or killed. The Las Vegas terror incident was also the 18th mass murder this year, incidents in which at least four people, not including the shooter, are killed.

Mark Bryant, founder of Gun Violence Archive said this about his organization:

"We weren't happy with crowd sourcing and automated bots, and we've been refining our methods ever since."

On a near hourly basis, the Archive updates with new information about gun-related incidents, typically with up to 140 data points, often even street-level information about the shootings.

The Gun Violence Archive does not track motives for attacks, but does track unintentional, defensive, and home invasion-related attacks, as well as ones in which children or teens are injured or killed, and incidents in which deaths or injuries to police or the shooters themselves occur. The organization does keep data on the types of guns used in mass shootings, but that information was not immediately available.

It should be noted this year's total is slightly behind 2016 where there had been 292 mass shootings.

Because someone shooting from the 32nd floor of a building across the street would be worried about someone with a gun on the ground.

Perhaps if those two Georgia police officers, one of whom was killed the other day, had guns the criminals would have changed their ways.

Same thing for the most recent terrorist. Had the officers who responded to his shooting had guns he wouldn't have fired at them through the door.

Finally, nowhere did I say anything should be banned. I support the 2nd Amendment. My point was I hear it all the time from people how if everyone carried a gun these kinds of shootings wouldn't happen or, and this is key, they would be minimized.

First, having a gun would not have stopped this shooting. Your little Glock wouldn't reach across the street to stop this guy. If all 20,000 people at this concert had a gun, nothing would have been different.

Second, the only time someone having a gun makes a difference is if they have time to prepare. As those two cops I mentioned above found out, having a gun doesn't mean squat if someone ambushes you.

Sen. John Thune (R-SD) on Tuesday responded to calls for increased gun control after the massacre in Las Vegas by telling reporters that shooting victims had a responsibility to protect themselves from gunfire.

“It sounds like [the shooter] used conversion kits and other things, you know, to make the weapons more lethal,” Thune reportedly told MSNBC’s Hallie Jackson. “We’ll look at the facts when we get them all in here. I think a lot of us want to do everything we can to prevent tragedies like that from happening again.”

But Thune shied away from the topic of gun control, arguing, “t’s an open society and it’s hard to prevent anything.”

Instead, the Republican senator offered advice to potential victims.
