Depends on the round used, but in general, most standard loads are still supersonic, so your statement is (mostly) correct.

I've never known one to make any noise by itself.

Personally I like them for hiding muzzle flash, for both reducing night vision flare esp. in indoor/urban combat environments and all around concealment.

I prefer to use ear protection at the range so that the silencer doesn't affect the accuracy of my shots.
