And then along came Irma

Dem butterflies are on steroids lately.

DISCUSSION AND 48-HOUR OUTLOOK
------------------------------
At 500 PM AST (2100 UTC), the center of Hurricane Irma was located
near latitude 16.7 North, longitude 54.4 West. Irma is moving
toward the west near 13 mph (20 km/h) and this general motion is
expected to continue into Tuesday, followed by a turn toward the
west-northwestward late Tuesday. On the forecast track, the center
of Irma will move near or over portions of the northern Leeward
Islands Tuesday night and early Wednesday.

Data from an Air Force Reserve Hurricane Hunter aircraft indicate
that the maximum sustained winds have increased to near 130 mph
(215 km/h) with higher gusts. Irma is a category 4 hurricane on the
Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale. Additional strengthening is
forecast during the next 48 hours.

Hurricane-force winds extend outward up to 40 miles (65 km) from the
center and tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 140 miles
(220 km).

Givin' the 'God fearing' people something to fear.

Was recently upgraded to Category 4. Some of the long range forecast tracks I've seen take Irma passed the northern coast of Cuba, and then on a northerly path through the Florida peninsula.

...HURRICANE IRMA BECOMES A CATEGORY 5 ON THE SAFFIR-SIMPSON
HURRICANE WIND SCALE...

NOAA and Air Force hurricane hunter aircraft data indicate Hurricane
Irma has intensified into an extremely dangerous Category 5
hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale with maximum
winds of 175 mph (280 km/h) with higher gusts. A special advisory
will be issued at 800 AM AST (1200 UTC) in lieu of the scheduled
intermediate advisory for Irma.

Also seeing mention that at 175MPH winds, this is the strongest of 2017 in the world.

if cuba gets hit first, the USA will reap the benefits. that's the european model. the american one has it hitting florida and full strength.

puerto rico is going to be slammed by a category 5. bouncing off of hispaniola.

I lived on the Florida east coast during the hurricane season of 2004. Man, that was wild. Anyway, I found the American models to be generally more accurate than the European models. I was quite impressed with their ability to predict tracks, less so with intensity. But I have no idea if that is still true, 13 years later.

Lord {JHWH} sure hates Caribs and Southerners, whacking them so much. Bengalis, too. Why else put all those poor folks in the path of repeated disaster? Divine wrath sucks.

But I digress. I briefly saw a headline somewhere about Irma upgraded to Category VI. Six! That's like turning the amp up to eleven or twelve! I know NOAA had to add colors to their graphics showing Harvey's rainfall, but a whole 'nother fucking category?!?

Basic lesson of global warming: More energy in the hydrosphere ==> more energetic storms. Heavier rain and snow, wetter-twistier twisters, colder-harder nor'easters, brutal action worldwide. Hope y'all enjoy kick-ass weather 'cause there'll be lots more of it.

The bitch has been shifted to the west in the forecast.

On the upside, I have procured plywood.

On the downside, I'm pretty reasonably frightened.
