Perhaps it's you that doesn't understand. The Native Americans were animists. Every damn piece of dirt, rock, animal, stream, river, etc. was 'sacred' to them. That is the nature of animism. Given those beliefs if we were to cede back to them all that they claim is part of their 'religious' heritage all of the rest of us would have to pack up and leave the continent.

In the spirit of compromise and reconciliation, I would like to propose that we stop taking down historical statues and erasing our history, good or bad. Instead, we should replace all their faces with shiny yellow Smiley Faces. After all, don't we all agree that America is about the pursuit of happiness? We need to celebrate that, even if sometimes it does involve stealing land, enslaving people and committing genocide. Freedom isn't free, and neither is happiness. Somebody has to pay for that shit.
