I rarely engage in these discussions here. I freely admit that I don't possess the emotional or intellectual capacity (or energy) to do so. Apologies in advance for commenting at all if that annoys you. It's a subject of some interest and importance to me, though, so I'll risk the inevitable anal rape/public shaming I'm likely to endure...

In case you really are curious for another perspective, my opinion (as a stranger on the internet, who knows literally nothing about you, outside of what is posted in this thread) is that privilege works like this:

In reality I don't give a shit.

In the end I could have gone to court and I would have won.....period.

I discriminate all the time.

I rarely am [wrong].

After each of these remarks, my thought was: "Because you are white."

That's how privilege works. We (white people) benefit if we recognize it, and we benefit if we don't.

It appears to me (again, from the little I have read here) that another option available to you, as a person with sufficient emotional intelligence to do so, is to acknowledge that privilege exists, notice it, notice that you benefit from it, and choose not to be ruled by your personal reaction or emotional response to it.

I'm not contesting the fact that the above minority groups often come across discrimination, especially in extreme R-wing America.
And these need to be addressed more pro actively, like Brian Stevenson or those who fight for equal pay for women do.

I'll just speak for myself. Here's a partial list of ways I have personally benefited from being white:

1. All the leadership, and almost all of my bosses, in nearly every organization I've ever worked for, have been white, like me.

2. All my teachers, most of my professors, were white, like me.

3. I've never once worried if maybe I didn't get that job, that loan, that apartment, that boy... because I'm white.

4. All my dolls, toys, and the "pretty girls" in magazines and on television growing up were white, like me.

5. I never once was arrested (or cited, or caught) doing the stupid shit most kids do at some point - jaywalking, trespassing, shoplifting, having sex in a parked car, loitering, possessing/smoking marijuana, speeding, etc..

6. When I travel outside the country for work in places where my whiteness makes me a minority, people often assume that I am a doctor, accommodate my wishes, give me the best chair, the best piece of chicken, free access to every/any place.

7. When I get angry or defensive I'm not dismissed as just another "angry black woman."

8. When I gather with other likeminded people and carry a sign that expresses my world view, I'm called a "protester" or an "activist" not a gangster, thug, rioter, or any other negative descriptor.

9. My parents never had "the talk" with me about how to stay safe (alive) in this world.

10. I feel like I could go on and on. I benefit in countless ways.

Reminded me of one. A black kid and I were walking to school one day, goofing off, being stupid school kids going to an integrated school. Sort of friends, more like acquaintances that just happened to catch up with each other that morning. We were passing some old abandoned houses slated for demolition. Two dumb kids picked up a few rocks and tossed them at the windows, breaking a few.

Got caught and called into the school office.

One kid got suspended from school. The other didn't.

Guess which one got which.

I don't doubt that especially in R- wing red states many blacks still encounter racist attitudes, but times have changed and I bet that others no longer do.

Why should you paint all of them with the victim brush and attack whites, instead of focusing on the real victims?


My immigrant friends and rellies from the States encountered hostility and xenophobia from blacks and whites alike (and I hate to tell you, but more xenophobic attitudes from american blacks and kinship and support from black immigrants from Africa).
