Think he'll sign it? I'm inclined to say he won't.

The U.S. Senate voted nearly unanimously on Thursday to slap new sanctions on Russia despite President Donald Trump's objections to the legislation, which has angered Russian President Vladimir Putin who threatened to retaliate. The Senate backed the measure, which also imposes sanctions on Iran and North Korea, by a margin of 98-2 with strong support from Trump's fellow Republicans as well as Democrats. The bill will now be sent to the White House for Trump to sign into law or veto.

It's already passed the House 419-3.

If Trump chooses to veto it, the bill is expected to garner enough support in both chambers to override his veto and pass it into law.

Then what. I can't imagine Donald's ego would handle that well.

Interesting times.

I think he would become apopletic. Melt down of the century! I want to see that happen.

Tweet storm! Tweet storm! 'Crooked congress wants to hit our friends with sanctions! Ruin the fun with friend Putin! Sad! We need to drain the sewer, soon!'

Comshaw

Prediction (probably wrong): Tromp will sit on the bill, pocket-veto it, let House+Senate pass it again, then ignore it, pulling an Andy Jackson (his hero!) by trashing separation of powers. "You want sanctions?" he'll say. "Well then, suckers, go ahead and fucking enforce them, 'cause I ain't gonna. And I know who you are. Payback? You'll find out."

If that went down like that, donnie and his brigade would lose their fucking minds. It would be hilarious. donnie is a failure as a president so far and things aren't looking much better for him down the road.

I don't particularly care on the issue one way or the other but I am pleased to see some unity and spine out of congress.

We do not have an emperor and it's good to remind the guy at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue that that is the case. Whoever that guy is.

John McCain is my Senator. I can't stand his politics and I really can't stand listening to him. he was right the other day though, when he said this body is not subservient to the president or some words to that effect.

That is pitch-perfect Trump.

I think you are probably qualified to run the White House Communications Department.

Fuck the USA.

Russia will survive and emerge stronger no matter what the US and their limp wrist friends in western Europe do. Russia has been through far worse than this. Already, the existing "sanctions" are providing opportunities for domestic Russian companies to expand and fill the role that used to be taken by imports.

The bear will never bow.

Simply. Unbelievable.

I fixed your spelling error.

Interesting theory. I hope he is able to thwart this criminal usurpation over the President's right to conduct foreign policy. Congress, with a lower approval rating than Russia among the American people, and far lower than President Trump, needs to be sent a message that they aren't going to prevent the President from setting foreign policy as the people elected him to do.

Russia approval rating with the American people = 28%

US Congress approval rating with American people = 20%

No error; he's indeed tromping all over us.

So I whip out the Constitution and review powers of the branches. Prez is commander of military forces, and militias when activated. Nothing in Article II specifies a role for the Prez in foreign affairs except to make treaties with Senate approval. Article I specifically empowers Congress to "punish... Offenses against the Law of Nations; To declare War..." and control military operations and conduct. Those are foreign affairs issues. Congress has the power to enable or constrain a Prez's foreign adventures. Look it up.

If he does pocket veto the bill, it will become law without his signature: http://www.heritage.org/constitution#!/articles/1/essays/32/pocket-veto

I don't know if he knows that or not, but I'm sure his advisors do.

Get yourselves a constitutional monarchy. Then you can have a prime minister who combines the executive and legislative. As long as they have a majority, bitching, moaning and partisanship will have zilch effect. And don't go saying it leads to tyranny. The UK, Canada, Australia and New Zealand are hardly tyrannies. Russia, Turkey and Iran are all republics.

Was a dated form of government when Caesar over threw the Roman Republic. You need a form of government that has evolved as the country does. Not some out dated one that is stuck 200 years in the past.

No wonder a good percentage of Yanks believe in Creationism of the short term type. Belief that your government sprang into being all perfect and in Bog's image contributes to that.

A head of state should be just a figurehead representing tradition and history. Daily workings should be left to the first minister of that figurehead.

A representative and responsible party should rule not one man.

A weak country needs a strongman to rule it.

LOL we can't get ourselves any bills through that don't totally fuck everyone but the elite who are connected to Congress/POTUS for numbers so fucking huge they have to be put into scientific notation just to fit on everyone's big screen TV's.

Like we are going to totally reform our government from the ground up

I support full sanctions on all 'Rump properties, industries and interests of all kinds.

Thanks for the clarification -- I'd not looked at pocket vetoes for awhile -- but there's more, with embellishments: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pocket_veto

There's also the option of Tromp just not enforcing sanctions, despite whatever the legislation says. Then come the lawsuits rising through the federal courts to SCOTUS... maybe by 2020. Expect nothing anytime soon.

Why are we discussing if he will sign it or not?

Congress clearly doesn't need his signature.

Because it's pretty clearly the public perception that he's beholden to Russian interests.

If he's not, he'll have no issue signing something with so much bipartisan support, right?

Not signed yet.

Tillerson stopped short of saying definitively that Trump would sign the sanctions, saying only that "all indications are he will sign that bill."

Vice President Mike Pence, at a press conference in Georgia with Prime Minister Giorgi Kvirikashvili, said unequivocally that "President Trump will sign the Russia sanctions bill soon."
