Pentagon study declares the American empire is ‘collapsing’

An extraordinary new Pentagon study has concluded that the US-backed framework of international order established after World War II is “fraying” and may even be “collapsing,” leading the United States to lose its position of “primacy” in world affairs.

This article was produced in partnership with AlterNet and Insurge Intelligence. Learn more about Nafeez Ahmed and how to support his work.

The solution proposed to protect US power in this new “post-primacy” environment is, however, more of the same: more surveillance, more propaganda (“strategic manipulation of perceptions”) and more military expansionism.

The document concludes that the world has entered a fundamentally new phase of transformation in which US power is in decline, international order is unravelling, and the authority of governments everywhere is crumbling.

Having lost its past status of “pre-eminence,” the US now inhabits a dangerous, unpredictable “post-primacy” world, whose defining feature is “resistance to authority.”

Danger comes not just from great power rivals like Russia and China, both portrayed as rapidly growing threats to American interests, but also from the increasing risk of “Arab Spring”-style events. These will erupt not just in the Middle East, but all over the world, potentially undermining trust in incumbent governments for the foreseeable future.

So $700 Billion a year isn't going to be enough!

I have no problem with that.

Iran unveils new missile production line

Iran has announced the launch of a new missile production line, according to its state media, against a backdrop of tension between the United States and Tehran.

The Sayyad 3 missile can reach an altitude of 27km and travel up to 120km, Iran's Defence Minister Hossein Dehghan said at an undisclosed location of an inauguration ceremony on Saturday.

The missile can target radar evasive fighter planes, unmanned aerial vehicles, cruise missiles and helicopters, he said.

Dehghan also said that the recent $110bn military deal between the US and Saudi Arabia was intended as a threat to Iran.

"We recently witnessed an immense purchase that some countries in the region paid as a ransom to America and they intend to bring weapons into the region, and this purchase was done with the goal of threatening Islamic Iran," Dehghan said according to the website for state TV.

America has trouble when they don't have Air Superiority!

Not really a problem, if anything it will be good for the US to quit propping up and controlling everyone and everything.

Interesting time to be alive.

LOL even if they weren't totally full of shit, they are still no threat to us.

They could get allllllllllllll their friends together and in a toe to toe all out fight with the US they might last a week.

One thing is becoming apparent is that the trend identified by the Pentagon is going to be advanced by the isolationist policies being implemented by Trump. The withdrawal from the Paris accord being the most obvious where the USA has gone from being a leader to nothing, practically overnight. The withdrawal from the top is another.

I don't believe the primacy referred to in the report is solely military primacy and focussing on this component would be a mistake. A lot of those countries that traditionally looked to the USA for leadership are now looking elsewhere, most of these are small and no threat to the USA militarily but when it comes to decisions in world forums the USA can no longer rely on them for undivided support.

Make America great again? I don't think so, only in your own backyard.

What isolationist policies?

The withdrawal from the Paris accord being the most obvious where the USA has gone from being a leader to nothing, practically overnight.

LOL...ohhhh noes not that!!!

So what?

It's not.

Their support is fucking worthless.

That means it's not isolationism to let them be worthless on their own.

America great again? I don't think so, only in your own backyard.

Our own backyard has been neglected in the name of globalism.

Time for all those super advanced and CLEARLY superior to the US in every way but the military to show us up and fuck for their own bread.

Well, you could argue that by being completely incompetent and insulting every one of our allies he's an isolationist by getting everyone to hate the U.S.

You could also argue that the only "allies" we have were "allies" because we were paying them to.

None of them give two pumps of rat shit about the USA.

Most people don't give a fuck about their own neighbors/local community/family much less some other country.

He promised to, somehow, not get the U.S. into stupid wars but wants to bomb places at the drop of a hat.

LOL, that's pretty standard for US CIC's and not at all a Trump thing.

And, of course, for all his bashing of Obama he's still using the basis of Obama's policies.

That's the fun part for me.

And suddenly it's all horrible/wonderful because Trump......LOL

If you're a devout (R) then those things they just got done bashing O for are now wonderful.

And devout (D)'s condemn allllll those things they adored Dear Leader Obama for.

Isolationism has been defined as:

A policy or doctrine of trying to isolate one's country from the affairs of other nations by declining to enter into alliances, foreign economic commitments, international agreements, and generally attempting to make one's economy entirely self-reliant; seeking to devote the entire efforts of one's country to its own advancement, both diplomatically and economically, while remaining in a state of peace by avoiding foreign entanglements and responsibilities.
