Aussies! Check in here!

Your lucky I don't take offence to such...
League, union, it's all the same.. starts with a c and ends with a rap
Only true football is AFL[/QUOTE

Hmmm, true football and AFL are not two things I normally associate with each other.

However as I am soon to be a guest in your state again I'll shall keep my own counsel so I can get through the airport unmolested.

I have to risk partially agreeing with Charlie here.

In the circles in which I move,
Footy = Aussie Rules (AFL = the league name, not the game name)
Football = Soccer
Rugby = Rugby League (If Melbourne got a team at the right time, i.e. when Western Force got the licence after major World Cup publicity, and Melbourne's team weren't pitiful crap then things might be different, but Storm are much better known here than the Rebels).
That game the All-Blacks and Wallabies play = Rugby Union

So, woolies and coles are banning plastic bags! Great, that's good news for the environment, right?!
WRONG!
What they are actually doing is banning all lightweight plastic bags and replacing them with thicker plastic bags that you will have to pay for!
Not only is this greenwashing at it's best, but these thicker bags cause just as much environmental damage.
We in Tassie have had this for a while now, and there is no conclusive proof that bag use has gone down in any significant way. In fact, it wasn't until very recently that the stores have provided recycling bins for these bags due to public pressure from aware consumers (they cannot go into your home recycle as they need specialised machinery to process!)
Tasmania has a massive problem with these thicker bags going to landfill.

So, is this bag ban a good thing? Well, yes! And, no.
Yes - because the thinner bags have traditionally been handed out in huge numbers, causing a massive waste and litter issue. Charging for thicker bags might make consumers more aware of how many they are taking home and discarding.
No - because they are still putting plastic into the waste stream, and many people simply cannot be bothered reusing them or forget to take them next time shopping.

In my opinion, both woolies and coles have missed a golden opportunity here. Both stores could have banned plastic bags completely and rebranded themselves as environmentally aware stores!
If places like Kenya can blanket ban plastic bags, surely Australia can do it too!?!

I suspect the proposed scheme is different but in England (seperate earlier legislation in Wales and Scotland I think) the imposition of charging for carrier bags led to a reduction in use by 75-80% from memory. Can't post the link at present but if you search the BBC website you'll find reports from the past couple of years.
Woollies and Coles currently hand them out like confetti and few take their own bags, boxes... in the U.K. charging led to dramatic changes of attitude... ie people remembered to take their own receptacles!
No reason why it wouldn't work here seems to me. If the scheme is right, which it might not be. That would be a big shame.

I've just today seen a report on the long-term impact of the changes in Britain.....and it's NOT good!
Seems that in the years since the changes were introduced, people have become so used to paying for bags that even a price increase for them hasn't deterred use from rising - to the point where the average yearly tonnage of bag waste is now almost back to pre-change levels.
So, the same weight of thicker bags is going to landfill as the weight of the thinner bags used to be.
I call that a fail.
Same has happened here in Tassie :(

That's not good at all... thanks, hadn't revisited the issue clearly!
Then looks like a ban is only way forward!

Yes yes ok the real football is soccer
Yet I stand by my original sentiment MEH RUGBY

Scared of a little girl? ;)

SA had a rugby team once...they didn't last long lol

Not of a little girl, more likely the other rabid AFL supporters. There seems to be a preponderance of Victorians among the Aussies on lit.

And to qualify your statement, SA had a rugby league team, Adelaide Rams. I think you will find they still have a Rugby, as in Rugby Union, team in SA. There is a club competition in Adelaide based around Universities and the armed forces. Also a SA team plays against other second tier states, Victoria, Western Australia as well as NSW and Qld Country teams.

Evening, fellow Strayns!

Plastic Free July is in full swing down here in Launy.... I have so far successfully avoided a single piece of throwaway plastic! No bags, no straws, no disposable coffee cups, no glad wrap.....
My 20 yr old kidley bean thinks I am completely barmy.....but I am quite chuffed that I have managed this so easily :)
Saving the turtles, one person at a time!

Tonight will be our coldest so far.... expecting minus 4. I may not survive!

Hey WQ,

Not sure about the whole plastic free thing. Whilst I do recycle I'm not sure industry is really serious about it. Even places that have removed the single use plastic bags have just replaced them with thicker plastic bags. Apparently that is better, but I have my doubts. I also hear that here in Melbourne some supermarkets are now going to charge for reusable plastic shopping bags. Target tried that here then just stopped charging people. But good luck with sustaining the effort.

Let's hope he's not head honcho of some new 'Interior Ministry' or 'Homeland Security Dep't' by then... complete with very large cap and lots of gold coloured trimming... the full tin-pot dictator look

You must be psychic...cause guess what I saw on the TV today...yep your prediction came true.

Can't wait to see him change the uniform to crusader garb and introduce scripture to the test for new Aussies...oh yes and a new department called The Southern Hemisphere Inquisition...couldn't use The Spanish Inquisition, something to do with copyright.

Wow so ASIO, AFP and Border Security in the same organization...ego overload!

Afternoon all,

Wet day timetable here in Melbourne town today. Was going to do some hacking in the garden till I heard the rain, then well just had another coffee and watched the news, only to discover we are getting a new govt department based on fear. Do we really want one guy to have so much power, I think not.

Welcome to all the new posters, just get stuck in and post stuff so others on here get to know you.

I heard the other day on the local news that the road works here in Melbourne for the new rail lines will be ongoing for another 5yrs. Wonder how all the gps people are going to go navigating that? My advice to anyone thinking of driving down St. Kilda road to get thru the city, don't. Use Clarendon St instead. Queens Rd will only get worse with these ongoing road works.

Hope your week goes well even if it's tax time again.

I second that motion...the Ayes have it! Voting closed...rugby is just silly

Now AFL that's a game.:D

Yeah right, as silly goes I'm afraid AFL really sits on top of the podium. Would struggle to claim half the Australian population as fans and has a lower international profile than Marbles.

 lets face it any game with tackles and such is silly. Just depends on how fanatical you are...

Sheesh, you West Islanders, Rugby is the only term for rugby union as you put it. Second most played team sport worldwide. Third largest world cup tournament and the AB's the team with the highest percentage wins of any sport. Their coaches get brought in by AFL and league teams for coaching and management sessions!

Our former PM just made an honorary citizen and Order of Australia recipient, and while there today he was paving the way for you lot to become officially a State of NZ!

time to leave I suspect..........

???

So the AFL have much bigger TV rights deals because they are the most followed sport in Australia, and you say that? Not sure what one eyed planet you are on. Oh and how many people make it to most of your games compared to AFL?

Be nice now I have to defend my sport :)

I'm always nice.

The broadcast rights was an interesting one. Yep, biggest deal in Australia. The CEO at the time played the networks off against each other brilliantly. Going forward with channel 10 broke, 9 at the mercy of its overseas creditors I fear all sports are going to get belted next time.

Most followed sport in Australia... can't agree there. I think Cricket would trump it.

Now the one eyed part, that mantle has got to the AFL fans. Your answer didn't touch on the international aspect. I'm sure to outside observers it's a quaint provincial game played in 3 states of a country (total population around 9 million) a long way away.

I heard today that afl has the fourth highest attendance rate of all sports in the world...unfortunately they didn't say what the other three were but I'm guessing, NFL, soccer and yeah I can't think of a third..lolr

I'll rephrase it was 5th
Not bad for a sport played in only 3 states
