Do you reply to comments?

Hey!

Kinda new here. Some thread must probably exist on the subject but I couldn't find it so here you go.

I've been using places like Wordpress before where it was common practice to reply to comments. I've had a few comments here and I'm sometimes unsure whether to reply to them. I mean there is no notification or anything of sorts to let the commenter to know, is there? But maybe then to future readers who might've been wondering the same thing?

Feedback is of course different. My question is specifically about comments.

Hey restcatooor. Welcome!
I leave responses for all comments as for me that is the whole point.
I often wonder if the original commenter ever sees it, but it is there.
I also respond to all emails.
When someone follows me s/he also gets a thank you email. With all the great writers here I take it as a huge compliment.
Happy writing

I'm a bit uncertain still. I try to reply as soon as possible if it poses a question. That much is clear. But i've always been very awkward when it comes to compliments, no matter which nature. I feel like it would be very unnatural of me to reply to compliments and follows with thanks. Instead I try to check out if they have any works themselves and put a couple on my reading list and try to return the favour. But I'd hate to receive likes and follows in return of follows. I'm sure I'm not alone with that thought.

Hey rescatooor:
Feel free to look at the comments and responses to my work. If you'd like feel free to PM me to discuss more.

I did respond to comments a few times, as a result of a previous thread. I never got a response. Then I got a long stretch of only finishing a very very few stories, and those didn't generally get good comments. I fell out of the habit.

But still it's a good idea. My latest entry got all good comments, but alas they were all from Mr. Anonymous.

I reply to PMs and e-mails when they don't appear to be combative. I rarely respond to comments directly on the story, but I have done so occasionally.

I'll rarely respond to comments because of the vanishing likelihood that the poster will return to read my response... although that *has* happened across serial pieces. I *do* respond to PM notes. Usually.

I'm with the camp that doesn't reply to comments, since they'd seldom be noticed. I'll reply to email most of the time, though, as long as they are polite.

The comments are for the readers, not the writers IMO. The way I look at it, I've already made my "comments" in the form of a story.

I do reply to emails, though.

Thanks for all the numerous replies!

I think I'll just stick with my current mode of replying if there seems to be a question. I don't want to flood my comment list with awkward thanks (and those would be very awkward indeed). I like to see my commenters discussing these things among themselves and I'm afraid my interruption might ruin that.

It doesn't seem to be common practice.

However, if a comment includes a very interesting question that I actually want to answer, then I go ahead and reply.

Stuff like responding to criticism, I had to hold myself back recently from doing that. (The thing was that some of the alleged problems raised were either covered in upcoming chapters, or a result of deliberate style choices relating to the genre I was playing in, and therefore not oversights on my part. But commenting to explain all that might have come off as whining.)

A savvy reader would have spotted that, so I reckon the comment reflects more on the commentator than it reflects on you the writer.
