Good luck H, in the end the eyes always have it. Ask GA, he has a pair tattooed on his ass. :D

One cuppa for HP.

Growing old is mandatory. Growing up is optional. ;)

Morning all,

The coffee is ready so have at it.

Too mow the yard or not to mow the yard, that is the question. Today or tomorrow could be another question.

Coffee!

How about mow half today and half tomorrow? I used to mow my lawn in hour increments when all I had was a push mower.

Things to know: PennGirl is 9; she has medium blond hair; we have previously dyed the ends of her hair blue, and have purple dye waiting to be used; she has previously said she wants to get the ends of her hair colored purple; I am okay with this. Yet this morning...

PennGirl, just a few minutes ago: Mom, you know how I wanted to dye the ends of my hair purple?

Me: Yes.

PennGirl: What if we dyed all the rest of my hair black?

Me: What? No. Why?

PennGirl: I've just always wanted to do that.

Me: For something you have always wanted, you have never mentioned this before, at all.

PennGirl: Pleeeease???

Me: No. Go on your Pokémon raid with Dad.

And so here I am, thinking it's not even noon and too bad I don't drink coffee...

Our daughters were in middle school before they were allowed to color their hair. My office is in what used to be my oldest daughter's bedroom. There are still stains on the carpet from her hair-dying parties.

The youngest never colored her hair anything but natural tones. Her thing was makeup. She was a ballet dancer (hence the lack of colorful hair) and I found it hard to say that she should wear makeup on stage, but couldn't wear it to school. She was ten when I made the rule that she could wear it as long as I couldn't tell she was wearing it, which left enforcement up to my judgement.

I got her to school late a few times because I had to send her back over and over to trowel off more makeup. About the time she learned what my standard was I learned that other girls in her class were wearing way more.

I inherited a fairly new riding mower so my push mower has been retired for a while. The lawn will be mowed tomorrow. I'm finishing up a Summer Loving story for that contest. I might even work on a couple more. Otherwise I'm taking the day off from chores.

I've spent a lot of time today fast asleep on the sofa (I had a crap night).
My Health & Temper have not been improved by my being unable to obtain some particular (brass) screws 3/8th No 4 dome head.
The box I've been trying to re-furbish is dated about 1940s (I guess), and it had a "Leeds & Northrop" galvanometer [well broken].

I'm getting a trifle peeved with this lack of bits.
Coffee Please

We haven't gone metric yet, so you might be able to order them from US sources.

I did a quick google for them and they popped right up, though I'm not sure if "dome head" is equivalent to "round head," nor do I know if you need a phillips head of a slotted head.

I'll try at our local timber and hardware yard on Monday. They have dusty boxes of ancient screws and fittings. How many do you need?

I spend most of my at-home days lounging on the recliner sofa, sometimes sleeping, whether or not the nights or outside days suck. My excuse: keep feet elevated to avoid swelling etc. Scattered bits of stuff surround me, the books, pens, electro devices, mug, musical instruments, wires, maps, snacks. Wish I could see it all.

Don't you hate missing bits? We have tons of bits strewn around the homestead, in the house and storage shed and RV and other stashes. Same goes for coffee (but not in the shed) -- all those big and little bags and cans. Huh, think I'll go re-load the little Krups espresso machine, then add cocoa and spiced rum. Then maybe I'll forget about not seeing.

[pause]

Oh yes, rum mocha, finest kind, much better now. [/me squints]

I'll keep that for tomorrow, as it is now dusk and I'll have tea.
Tomorrow after breakfast, however, will be Rum-something.
finest-kind !
:).

Standard formulae exist for counting the number of fittings to buy. Screws-nuts-bolts-etc, get in sets of five: "four to use and one to lose".

Meanwhile, a previous homestead's local hardware store had been shuttered for many years but with merchandise left displayed in dusty windows. Among those: unopened boxes of Erector Sets circa 1950. Yow.

[/me envisages old R.Crumb cartoon with young lad proudly displaying his Erection Set's massive tower...]

Today is boring. Languidly lounge, gather strength. Eat and drink what I want today. No booze or smoke after noon tomorrow, and nothing at all else after midnight, then be ready for surgery the next afternoon. I don't expect to see the old disclaimer:

WARNING: Do not look into laser with remaining eye.

For PennLady, Not Wise and Chloe - Daughters

I have 5 daughters. And have been subjected to most requests, blandishments, bribes and trickery over the years. The old 'Lets ask your mother what she thinks' was pretty effective, but if I thought their adulthood would make things easier I was wrong. They are now all between 21 and 27 and whilst the requests are less, the strategy is to get mum on side first. Then even the faintest disapprobation is met with a smile and 'poor old dad' expression and they do their own thing anyway!

My solace is that they have their only and eldest brother in training. Thus far he has worked it out that he is only asked something when they have already decided to do the opposite of what he is likely to say. Poor lad - he still occasionally suffers from the fact that he was always rather protective of his not so little sisters.

I could make quite an interesting "found" poem out of bits of the posts on this page. I may go back and try it tomorrow. :D

Screws, hair color, daughters, lasers. Quite a combination I must say.

Fresh coffee for the evening crowd.

There is thunder to the southwest but I doubt I will see any rain. The lake blocks most stuff from that direction. We need a little rain to tell the truth.

12-mile hike today, through very hilly terrain - 2,800 feet of climbing.

My knees hate me.

Well, that all sounds familiar except for me it was three protective and vey big older brothers who used to scare the crap out of anyone I dated. And my Dad was the one I played off against Mom.

With five daughters in that range you must have been keeping mum pretty busy, back 20 or 26 years ago.

I remember your efforts to support the Italian economy.

My three range from 27 to 32 and I could be in the same situation. Fortunately the youngest usually sides with me, and I can get the husbands leaning to my side. Without a strong majority against me, I can hold my own.

I don't have any children. I got worn out being the oldest of a boatload of kids. Some of the girls and some of the guys dyed their hair. I never did.

The monsoons have come. Thunder shook the house and about an inch of rain fell in the course of a couple of hours. Hurray!! Temps are already down to the low nineties, high eighties. No more three digit heat... at least not until August. :)

It's nice watching my kids suffer the same (grown-up) problems as I did with them.
From a simple "close the door" to "turn that light off", I remember smiling when I thought of their first utility Bill when in their first home.

But now - its time for a decent coffee.
Got any of that Black Rifle stuff, please Chloe ?
