I have seen enough experts opinion to say the pictures are of her and her Navigator.

But not enough to authenticate the time.

If she was captured by the Japaneses it is possible they step forward. Unlikely, but possible.

From the versions of the photo I have seen online, I don't know how you could ever tell that is Earhart and Noonan. Too far away. But I'll watch the History Channel show Sunday to see what the "experts" think. If they can say it is them, dating the photo is probably almost irrelevant. They know where it is and the only time they could have been there was during the ill fated flight around the world. So, that would put them in the hands of the Japanese. I also read that you can supposedly see the plan on the deck of one of the ships, but I'm not seeing that.

I'm still a fan of the theory that she just ran out of gas and crashed into the ocean some where short of Howland Island. The plane sank and they both drowned. Because the plane is so small and the ocean is so deep, the plane will never be found. I think the theory that they landed on Gardner Island is a decent theory, but I just think that if that happened, there would have been more definitive evidence still there. I never put much stock in the idea they were captured by the Japanese because her radio transmissions where she said they were running low on fuel should have put them well outside Japanese held regions, unless they were WAY off course.

The accusation that she was captured and held on Saipan is decades old. The Japanese have yet to admit to it and may be completely unaware of the truth.

I think it would be really interesting to look at that period of Japanese airframe and engine development to see if any of the features unique to the electra found their way into Mitsubishis.

The Lockheed Electra she was flying was commercially available to anyone. The Japanese could have acquired the aircraft directly, or through a proxy, at anytime in 1936-7. The only modifications to Earhart's plane were to the fuselage for greater fuel storage.

While the Japanese may have learned somethings from the engines/air foil, they applied them poorly. There is an old Japanese movie out there called, "Zerosen moyu." (It's available sub-titled." The entire story of the Zero as told primarily from the perspective of the ground crew. Most especially as to how there was NO real parts interchangeability. The engines were made in Mom and Pop shops and while consistent within the shop, varied greatly from shop to shop. And that was the norm for ALL of their mechanized equipment. It took an American in the post war period to teach them the value of Quality/Process Control (W. Edwards Demming).
