Officer Jeronimo Yanez killed Philando Castile for no fucking reason.

Prosecutors countered that Yanez didn't see Castile's gun, which was later found in the pocket of the shorts Castile was wearing. Castile's last words, spoken to Yanez after he'd been shot, were, "I wasn't reaching for it."

The world learned of Philando Castile’s death through a grim livestream launched by his girlfriend seconds after Castile was shot five times by a police officer. Many were outraged by what they saw as Diamond Reynolds’ outwardly calm voice described Castile being shot after reaching for his wallet.

Yanez was charged with second-degree manslaughter, punishable by up to 10 years in prison, though sentencing guidelines suggested around four years would have been more likely. Yanez was also cleared of lesser counts related to endangering Reynolds and her daughter for firing his gun into the car near them.


The jury opted for acquittal, clearing Yanez of manslaughter Friday after five days of deliberation that nearly ended in deadlock. Castile’s family cursed and stormed from the courtroom, and despite the acquittal, the city where Yanez works almost immediately announced plans to dismiss him.


Juror Dennis Ploussard said the jury favored acquittal early in the week by a 10-2 margin. He said they spent a lot of time dissecting the “culpable negligence” requirement for conviction, and the two holdouts eventually agreed Friday on acquittal.

Thousands of angry, woke and fired-up Minnesotans took to the streets on Friday, hours after ex-police officer Jeronimo Yanez was acquitted of all charges in the shooting death of 32-year-old motorist Philando Castile nearly one year ago.

On Friday morning, Yanez, 29, was cleared of a manslaughter charge as well as two lesser charges. In some small semblance of justice, the AP reports that Yanez will soon be out of a job as a police officer.

State police said on Twitter that it arrested 18 protesters after a smaller group splintered off and walked down an entrance ramp to block Interstate 94 in St. Paul, shutting down traffic in both directions.

"The system continues to fail black people, and it will continue to fail you all," Valerie Castile, Philando's mother, told reporters after the verdict. "My son loved this city and this city killed my son and the murderer gets away. ... I'm mad as hell right now."

Castile's sister Allysza, weeping, said, "He didn't deserve to die the way he did, and I will never have faith in this system." Castile family lawyer Glenda Hatchett vowed to continue fighting.

• Wall Street Journal, 2009 statistics from the Bureau of Justice: Blacks were charged with 62 percent of robberies, 57 percent of murders and 45 percent of assaults in the 75 biggest counties in the country, despite being only 15 percent of the population in these counties.
• Blacks "commit 75 percent of all shootings, 70 percent of all robberies, and 66 percent of all violent crime" in New York City, even though they consist of 23 percent of the city's population

• According to The Washington Post, 50 percent of the victims of fatal police shootings were white, while 26 percent were black. The majority of these victims had a gun or "were armed or otherwise threatening the officer with potentially lethal force,"
• "The black violent crime rate would actually predict that more than 26 percent of police victims would be black"
• 12 percent of white and Hispanic homicide deaths were due to police officers, while only 4 percent of black homicide deaths were the result of police officers.
