Former U.S. Rep. Anthony Weiner, whose penchant for sexting strangers ended his political career and sparked a probe that upended the presidential race, pleaded guilty Friday to a sex charge, tearfully apologizing for communications with a 15-year-old girl that he said destroyed his "life's dream in public service."

Weiner pleaded guilty to a single count of transmitting sexual material to a minor, admitting he began exchanging online messages with the girl in January 2015 and engaged in obscene communications that included "sharing explicit images and encouraging her to engage in sexually explicit conduct."

"I have a sickness, but I do not have an excuse," he said.

The 52-year-old former Democratic congressman paused repeatedly as he fought back tears and tried to compose himself. He said he knew the texting was "as morally wrong as it was unlawful."

Pleading to the charge, which will require that he register as a sex offender, exposes him to a sentence of up to 10 years in prison, but Weiner signed a plea agreement with prosecutors in which he agreed not to appeal any sentence between 21 and 27 months in prison. His lawyer can request leniency at a sentencing scheduled for Sept. 8.

Wouldn't Mueller like to have a chat with him?

Perhaps Mr. Weiner will exchange Hillary/Huma secrets for no jail time.

Won't be long and he'll have the computer and all the files he wants. He can subpoena all of Obama's and Hillary's electronic files from the NSA.

If the case is over, any related subpoena power ends with it.

Uh, no....

Special counsel, remember. He can subpoena ANYTHING he wants to look at. He can't recommend any additional charges against Weiner, but he can STILL look at the evidence and files.

No matter if it has any relevance to the investigation he is tasked to conduct? Which was after all specifically the Russia issue. Clinton emails is veering off on a tangent a bit, innit?

Might be worthy of a separate investigation, but do you need a Mueller for that?

You need to become more informed. This is going to go on for a long time. several cans of worms will be opened and people will go to jail.

Mueller was tasked with investigating the Russia issue "and other matters." That language gives him the power to do just about anything he wants to do.

The Dems really did not think this out very well. A special counsel with nearly unlimited power investigating the Russian involvement leads to Hillary and DNC emails, collusion, coverup, voter disenfranchisement and possible voter fraud, OBAMA, and other things not good for the Dems.

Not that it matters, we'll wait 4-6 years before Mueller releases a report detailing nothing of real interest.

Not, you may be sure, in connection with any files NSA may have from or on Hillary and Obama, even assuming they could be subpoenaed.

Remember Ken Starr? Blowjobs had fuck all to do with Whitewater.

Actually it says:

"The Special Counsel is authorized to conduct the investigation confinned by then-FBI Director James 8. Corney in testimony before the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence on March 20, 2017, including:

any links and/or coordination bet ween the Russian government and individuals associated with the campaign of President Donald Trump; and

any matters that arose or may arise directly from the investigation; and

any other matters within the scope of 28 Code of Federal Regulations § 600.4(a)."

Looked it up out of curiosity. Here's what 28 Code of Federal Regulations § 600.4(a) says:

(a) Original jurisdiction. The jurisdiction of a Special Counsel shall be established by the Attorney General. The Special Counsel will be provided with a specific factual statement of the matter to be investigated. The jurisdiction of a Special Counsel shall also include the authority to investigate and prosecute federal crimes committed in the course of, and with intent to interfere with, the Special Counsel's investigation, such as perjury, obstruction of justice, destruction of evidence, and intimidation of witnesses; and to conduct appeals arising out of the matter being investigated and/or prosecuted.

So no, not anything he wants. The topic of that hearing, whih was Russian inteference in the 2016 election, and new crimes committed in the course of his investigation (obstruction of it, for instance).

They can be subpoenaed along with anything else. The House Intel Committee is doing the very same as we speak, of course, now they will have to step aside for the Special Counsel's investigation, as will the Senate's investigation.

Nothing in government can be withheld from this counsel if the evidence leads him there, nothing.

Remember Ken Starr? Blowjobs had fuck all to do with Whitewater.

Devil's in the details. I have no idea how narrow or not Starr's directives were.

Also, it wasn't what Starr found that got (or almost got) Slick Willie. It was not saying "Yeah, I got a hummer. I'm the leader of the free world, I deserve all the head I can get."

What counsel? We're talking about the criminal case against Weiner, not Special Counsel Mueller's investigation of Trump.
