He was brilliant. Became a star surgeon and medical perfesser and couldn't leave the drugs/booze alone. At the end he lost his medical license and perfesser gig then killed himself. He was a drunk in high school. Not a problem.

Here it's the opposite.
There's a high accountability to the public and a culture of blame if things go wrong. So you'd be more likely to see people interested in covering their back.

For example:
If the judge let loose a former drug addict who stabbed someone with a knife… What if that person becomes a surgeon and in a fit of rage does something bad on the operation table… .. Kaput for the judge's career.
So over here I'd expect the judge to over- sentence than to under- sentence, so to speak.
Unless she paid him under the table.

But it took place in the UK, so I wouldn't know how things are over there.
