Senior Moments

Hey Spencer, glad i found this place. Will hopefully ge checking in more often. Glad your retired and having fun.:kiss:

Ahh, coffee. When I was growing up, it was coffee or water, but always coffee in the morning. I can't ever remember not drinking it. I've always liked it strong and black, we only had Pet milk in a can, for cream. And sugar, you didn't waste sugar putting it in coffee.

Funny how times have changed. We used to buy our coffee in the great big cans. Maybe 50 lbs.? All I can remember about them, the cans were green and were MJB. For the winter, my mother would order 10 of the cans to be shipped upriver, You might run out of other items, but you didn't run out of coffee.

Hello...WOW, I remember one pound cans of Maxwell House. Do you think the larger cans were based on where you lived? I live near Pittsburgh, definitely not rural. But my grandparents lived in the 'country' and I don't remember seeing cans of coffee that large there either. Could it have been something common in the south. I'm not familiar with the south.

Congrats.

Oh my. I was just diagnosed with high BS & BP. A1C was 8.6, never had issues until i slowed down, not really retired only 56. But was layed off end of March, so came home to Texas to downsize house. Hoping to get this under control.

I was pre-diabetic for 8 years. One day I went to the doctor and to my surprise, they did blood work. I'd crossed the line and was diabetic. I insisted I wasn't diabetic without telling her of the half cartoon red velvet cake ice cream! My blood sugar was hoovering around 140. I was diagnosed with cancer a few months later and the nurse told me that the chemotherapy often raised your blood sugar. A few months ago my PCP told to take 1/2 of the metformin because he was afraid my BS could drop too low. My A1C was around 3 at the time. I'm waiting for him to take me off the metformin altogether, but that might not be wise. The first thing I'm eating is...........you guessed it. Red velvet cake ice cream. The foods I miss the most are bananas, biscuits and rice!

This was in the West. From a restaurant supply house. All our supplies had to come in by boat. There was no road into the ranch. The cans were 2 and a half feet tall. You can find them in antique places, once in a while.

And that would make perfect sense based on my 'uneducated' perception of ranch life in the present or past. I'm sure it was not an easy existence but I bet there were parts of it that were so beautiful. I have traveled in the west a couple of times and have to admit I'm in awe of the beauty I've discovered.

LOL...perfect for those of you who are addicted to the caffeine. :D. Now you just need a cup. :D

oh my. it is good for you though that your dose is lower.
Doc put me on metformin 500mg 2 a day. I hate putting drugs into my body - so working hard on diet, exercise and exploring Essential Oils. When I go back in 3 months I want to see a drastic change in numbers - and no need for the metformin or the Lisinopril for BP. they are both gradually coming down so it's all on me now! taking care of ME! Learning what foods I can eat. Already missing Rice and ice cream, didn't realize banana's were on the bad food list. oh and flour tortilla's... those do drastic things to my sugar levels. :rose:

Keep working on it.

Cinnamon helps lower blood sugar if you're pre-diabetic. Everything I've read says it has no effect on type 2. I still put cinnamon on a lot of food. I also eat no-sugar added ice cream. I know it's not the best for one's health, but I want it. I no longer cook rice at home, but if I go out, I will get gumbo, jambalaya or something that comes with rice. I have pasta once a month, usually at the end of the month. It's a matter of learning what drives your blood sugar up. I miss m bananas and grapes but kiwi, blackberries and blueberries have no effect!

Not sure if you guys know about it, but Walmart sells an A1C test kit. You get two tests, and they take about six minutes to use. They are dead on accurate. I've used them for the last three years now, and I love them. They cost all of twenty-three dollars for the two pack, and its nice knowing what the doctor will say when he gets his results :D

Keep it under 7.0 people, you don't want to end up in my shoes, cuz diabetes damage isn't reversible.

Cinnamon doesn't work that way. My A1C was near 9. Doc was gonna up my mess. I said let try something. 3 weeks I took a cinnamon capsule you can get in the vitamin area at Walmart. I take one in the morning at one at night. In 3 weeks the A1C went from 9 to 7.8. Then 6.9 and now 6.4. I have not changed my diet much, just more protein and less carbs and not doing exercise at all but walking. DOC said blood pressure blood sugar , cholesterol and weight is down. Only thing I've done really different is the cinnamon capsules.

Thanks! I think I'll do the cinnamon again. I'm willing to try almost anything that's natural.

Be careful with the cinnamon. In powdered form it can cause suffocation. Dissolved or in liquid capsule forms it's no problem.

I'm not that senior but i get 'em. I wander if this is the start of things to come ......roll on senility a world of your own and revenge on the kids !

DGO...^^^^ that's hilarious. I had not seen it. Thank you for sharing the laugh. :rose:
