For new authors: This is why you shouldn't take scores seriously

We who've been here for some time see a lot of threads where new authors worry over their scores and comments they received. Why doesn't it have an H? Why is it under four?

And along with that other threads along the lines of "What appeals to readers?" "How can I get more people to like my story" and the most pertinent to this particular gem, "what are the turn on and turn offs..."

This comment I'm sharing is the definitive example of why votes and scores shouldn't be taken to heart.

Very nice till the end

BUT stupid sonny just got his first piece of mommy and he ONLY wanted to cum on her tits??? 4 stars, WOW what a fucking turn off!!!!!!!!!! instant 10 star story into 4...

So according to his comment 'Johnny' really enjoyed this story...hell, he was going to give 10 stars

But he dropped it to a four because:

He didn't like where the cum shot landed.

This is a seven page story, about 23k and he loved it until...and then its "what a turn off!"

That is all it takes with a lot of readers. One little ridiculous thing that happens to be a particular dislike or not giving them exactly what they like and there goes your five.

So if you're new and unhappy with your scores and worried about what you're doing wrong? Odds are nothing. Just keep writing your story your way. Its impossible to make everyone happy.

Same applies to people who've been here a long time who still at times get frustrated. Just look at the source.

Its not about writing skill or technique here or even how enjoyable it is. A low vote many times has nothing to do with your grammar or characters or ideas, Its 100% about personal preference to many here.

Another thought; I don't know if it actually helps, but in my latest series I put an introduction to every chapter listing the kinks one would find in the story. Hopefully it saves those who would be offended/disappointed the time to read it only to find it's not what they imagined it would be.

Also, I have noticed that time is a great leveler of the ratings.

But lovecraft's main message of just writing what you have in your head has been oft repeated because it is true. Write for yourself.

The disclaimer isn't a bad idea, the problem is you can't list every thing you're going to do. Calling out non con or gay male or incest or maybe cheating might save you hassle, but who would think you'd have to call out "The money shot goes on the tits" as a warning?

And yes, I've had low scoring stories that as years go by creep up. I even have an LW story from 2012 that eventually went over a 4.5

Personally, I think "money shot on the tits" needs its own category.

My story has the husband bound to a chair while watching the wife he cheated on cheating on him and if he looks away she zaps him through the shock collar he's wearing.

The initial score was slightly over four...still higher than I expected. Its over the last five years crept up to an H-although this thread will see the end of that.

Some of the early comments are pretty entertaining.

While the pregnancy fetish is certainly strongest in incest stories it exists beyond that. At another site I post stories on there is a vocal segment who want every woman in every story to get pregnant.

Funniest is when commenters battle it out with some saying get her pregnant and others just as opposed. In one of my few incest stories I had the male use a condom and that didn't go over well I can tell you.

I've made a mental note: All future cum shots to be described as a hosing down of the entire scene...that'll take care of that one.

So this gives me another idea; I'll write the intro/disclaimer, but be very detailed and specific about just what all those kinks entail...I'll even use examples with imaginary made up people to help. Then at the end, I'll give the big surprise ending: Dear Reader, You Just Read The Whole Story...The End!!!

(I'm probably missing the weak link to this theory...peoples is hard to figger and easily riled )

Anyone read Rod McKuen lately? Not likely. He was the rage back in 1969 then went away.Ditto Erich Segal. A one book wonder about the same time. Many have one season and go away forever.

LITs the worst place I know of to get an honest and accurate appraisal of your wares. It reminds me of a whore house in Germany I went to . The place featured every woman possible. it was Paradise at the start and MEH at the end of the evening. That's LIT. Half your score depends on your place in line.

The real challenge for LIT writers is, you cant do much with LIT stories.

A LIT writer can be competent to cause orgasm yet inspire no one. And theres where LIT fails. Its where you fail regardless of your score.

But the same can be true of almost any written work – except that, of course, you don't often get to vote on a book you buy from a bookstore. You can get upset because the plot takes what is, for you, an unbelievable direction or the ending sounds as if it's been rushed. Just as much a personal thing. People are weird.
