Social democracy does play a part, IMO. Old days you needed kids for old age support. Industrialization brings consumer goods. Combined with social welfare you can now go out and buy big screen TVs and unwarranted 8cyl pickup trucks.

You will never get dismantling of the welfare state past voters. You will need to do something awfully undemocratic or pray for a natural disaster that puts us back to pre-industrial revolution days. Dreamers!
