The I-10 all the way from Lordsburg New Mexico through Needles California seems to be completely free from snow.

And I'm concerned about the desert why?

The Carefree Highway is always a good ride

I'm on it almost daily. Sometimes I traversed the length of it a couple of times in a day.

Yesterday, I found myself all the way south on the I-10 and way west. As in East LA practically. I wanted to get back up to the Wickenburg area. GPS said a few minutes faster to go back to the 303 (outer freeway loop) I decided to chance it going the back way on the back side of the White Tanks mountain range.

At first, it was a bunch of boring creosote flatland desert but what made it particularly interesting and picturesque was there weren't even any barbed wire fences it's completely open range there. It's the largest chunk of open range that I've bumped into, and I've seen most of the lower half of Arizona.

As you turn onto Vulture Mine Road it's suddenly starts looking like that great Sonora Desert with all the Saguaros like the Carefree highway only it's a moderately twisty bit of blacktop that's incredibly picturesque. It reminds me of the road to Canyon Lake but with less twists and better cacti. Crags and peaks like you see up towards morenci. Fantastic place to get lost with a 4x4 and a couple weeks provisions.

I assume the locals in Wickenburg would think I'm an idiot for not knowing all of that exists just outside of Wickenburg. Outsiders never see that because they come and go to Wickenburg off of US 60 or whatever the number is the one to Vegas.

I really like Cave Creek as well but there's really not a lot to do there if you don't simply have your own porch to sit on up there

Don't do Scottsdale, do Wickenberg. Scottsdale's western town facade is simply trying to be Wickenburg. If you get there by way of Highway 74 the Carefree Highway it's an absolutely beautiful drive and you will definitely get stuck behind a horse trailer or two.

I told him it was in Anchorage, in my garage. He just walked away and told me I could reload my shit. He let motor homes roll through while all this was going on.
