It is more than a little troubling that the Majority Leader and the GOP would silence a sitting senator in good order because they do not like what is being said.

The distasteful statement: [Sessions] “had used the awesome power of his office to chill the free exercise of the vote by black citizens" while a US Atty.

This is a statement that is a part of the official record from the 1986 hearings in which Sessions was rejected for a judgeship. It was being read aloud. Rule 19 was designed to preserve the decorum of the Senate and prevent specific character attacks that would lead to open fights on the Senate floor, not to prevent open, courteous and vigorous debate.

This is far, far more egregious an action than the poor execution of the immigration executive orders. It is worse than any so-called nuclear option to get a SC justice confirmed with a simple majority.

The Republic died a little bit today.

That isn't true, the distasteful passage was her calling Sessions a "disgrace" which violates Senate rules. She deserved to be shut up.

Actually, I love it. It has been so long since the Republicans did nothing but cower in the face of Progressive bullying and double-standard. Trump seems to be rubbing off on them, they are growing some balls and they are holding Progressives to their own standards (rules) on "hate speech."

I watched the broadcast. What I posted was the specific quote McConnell recited when invoking Rule 19. You, (and ABC's reporting), are referring to the warning she was given earlier by the President Pro Tem.

And to be very clear, she was again quoting from the official record in 1986, and she was quoting a sitting senator from the time. Nothing could be more relevant to the subject before the senate, the the senate's own rejection of this person. This is suppression and political censorship plain and simple.

Cruz has called other Senators liars - nothing. The Senate is replete with much hotter, less decorous and hate-filled personal attacks that pass unremarked.

I thought you were smarter than that.

Did I issue any personal insult to you?

Elections have consequences.

Not only is it time to hold the Senate to civility in the face of their hostility, but it is time to make them filibuster for fucking real. I'm up for that!

This has nothing to do with the election. Parts of the Senate's own official record cannot be read aloud?

Now, I am watching several other senators read the same letter and there is no Rule 19 invocation. I wonder what is the difference?

The Constitution gives the House and the Senate the power to write their own rules and they don't have to conform to anyone's code of ethics except their own.

If the official record correctly quoted a person charging that Session was every bad thing you can think of in the world, it would still be in violation of senate rules to disparage his character and motives on the floor of the Senate.

Yes it does.

The Republican Party did not have a leader before, it does now. He is setting the tone.

Because they want to provoke. The letter is here-say and innuendo and nothing else. Now the shock value has worn off and the Democrats are proving how low they will go and I fucking love it, I love every fucking minute of it because now they have made a vacuous slander the issue on a fellow Senator who is going to be confirmed no matter what they do thanks to their application of the nuclear option when they were in power. Lizy has been out all over the place, she is the darling of the Progressive Socialists and it was about time that this fake Indian, oppressor of minorities (native-Americans in academia) and plagiarizer got a little bit of a smack-down and a warning going forward; we are not going to let you spew hate without substance.

I'm loving every minute of it.

Warren asserted that "to put Senator Sessions in charge of the Department of Justice is an insult to African-Americans."

To support this claim, roundly disputed by African-Americans who know Jeff Sessions, Warren resorted to quotes from 1986 when the Senate did not confirm the Alabama man as a federal district court judge.

She cited Coretta Scott King who claimed that Sessions had "used the awesome power of his office to chill the free exercise of the vote by black citizens." She also quoted Ted Kennedy who said that Sessions is "a disgrace to the Justice Department." ...

It seems to me that Warren did impute to Sessions conduct unbecoming a Senator. If he tried (per Mrs. King) to chill the rights of African-Americans ( he didn't; he was acting on a complaint filed by local African-American officials), that was conduct unbecoming a Senator. So too if (per Kennedy) Sessions was a disgrace to the Justice Department.

Conduct unbecoming a senator was Ted Kennedy's lifestyle.

A socialist piece of shit bemoaning that "The Republic died a little bit today"...

That's some rich crap right there.

Ted Cruz once called McConnell a liar on the Senate floor, and he wasn't punished at all.

This thread is funny without being very surprising. There's basically no punishment for the opponents of Donald Trump that would be "going too far" for the RWCJ.

Just a bunch of right-wing whiners!

Whether you call yourselves Republicans, conservatives, alt-rightists, racists, white supremacists, the fact is your all whiners.

Didn’t like the “black” guy, huh? Not too crazy about MLK, or his Missus?

You're so pleased that the GOP is finally growing a set! For eight years, your beloved GOP obstructed a president from doing his job. Now that took balls!
Why are we in the shape we’re in? George W. and then your ersatz president, Mitch, “The Turtle” McConnell, obstructing everything and anything the president wanted to do, including his right, decided by the people and specified in the Constitution, to appoint a Supreme Court justice.

How many of you send or have sent your kids to public school? I’ll guarantee you that not one senator has sent their kids to public school and, in all likelihood, few and far between are the reps that have. Neither have any of the plutocrats in the cabinet. Amway billionaire Betsy DeVos probably never went near a neighborhood that had a public school in it. When was the last time your senator bought a loaf of bread or filled up his car with gas?

When SS is privatized and Medicare and Medicaid disappear, you’ll all be on your own, for your retirement, for your health care. I hope you never need a kidney transplant or heart or back surgery. Those bills go into the six figures.

It’s kind of like winning a vacation. You win something you wanted and then they tell you that you have to pay the taxes on its value.

Good luck with the Donald. You got what you wanted, NOW DEAL WITH IT!!

Oh, does this mean Jeff Sessions can still keep the white sheet with the eyeholes in his closet?

How so, exactly?

Same reason it's funny watching you cry about the republic suffering.

She's a socialist who hates the republic, like you. :)

That is something you could only truly say after she lost an election.

That would be the ultimate stuff yes, but I can truly say it because on a federal level her and her ideology have been totally marginalized.

USA to Sen. Warren.....STFU.

That could change in 2years though, but only if you and the other Social Justice Democrats get out there and kill whitey!!!

Whites are born Nazi's and deserve to die!! Get some KO!! GET SOME!!!

Gloating, they are gloaters.

The whiners are on your side, so are the violent protesters and most of the hate crimes and nearly every single false flag hate crime.

How many of you send or have sent your kids to public school?

I'd never do that to my kids.

When SS is privatized and Medicare and Medicaid disappear, you’ll all be on your own, for your retirement, for your health care.

Those scams were already fucked and thus I was already responsible for my own shit....what else is new?
