Last chance to block Betsy

Eight years ago, qualifications or money did not matter at all. The plaintive wail was, the President deserves his picks, he won, elections have consequences! And you are right. This is about protecting teachers, even those in failing schools, because they, too, are reliable donors and voters.

This is also a woman who has put her money where her mouth is when it comes to promoting alternative education. That part has been completely glossed over.

There is a palpable fear here that the other team might actually improve the system.

It's not about the children...,

... it's about the party.

The Wisconsin experience should have been a wake-up call to some politicians re. the power of the unions, or lack thereof.

I agree. Can the Department of Education, go to block grants if you feel throwing money at the problem is the solution, but by all means, let the 50 states try what they think works and when you find something that works, adopt it.

;) ;)

Now I know that it is popular with those who lean leftward to point out failures to keep the power of teachers and their unions intact, but the whole idea is not a failure:

When you know that you are enlightened and that you are battling deplorables, there is no such thing as a wake-up call.

Ishtard & Ishspawn had a really bad night with the wimminz last night. For once, it wasn't a female cop or the "wife".

Our poor education system is not due to lack of caliber teachers. It's due to crap standardized testing.
I can't live on a teacher's salary. I had to work a second job. I bought most of my own materials.
I scored 1100 out of 1600, which isn't terrible.
If pay was increased, there would be more competitive hiring. Not to mention, a person educating the future shouldn't be forced to work a second job to live.
This isn't a Trump issue. She's an embarrassment and I don't understand how anyone would be in favor of her appointment.

Then start fighting City Hall and get your neighbor's property taxes raised and demand that your school stop creating new administrative positions.

The Department of Education does not set teacher's pay.

We have lots of bears and guns in my district. Higher taxes won't help that. :D

Then you are not going to be able to afford to pay teachers what you feel you should be paid.

You are nationalizing a local issue because it hits close to you.

Maybe start looking for some help from your state.

I can corroborate based on my own experience. My friend opened a gofundme recently to buy basic school supplies for her kids. I gave generously. I can't stoop to legitimizing some pointless political circus but this reality is very close to home. My friend and her husband have also had to seek more work because she took a paycut to work at this particular school. I can assure some people being total assholes in this thread that she is not a dreg following the path of least resistance. She's extraordinarily talented, and going to where her skills and compassion are needed.

I hope she does not get confirmed. But she will...

Honestly, would much rather see Rhee. Then we will really see the the teacher unions flip their shit. Let's face it, despite all the smoke that is what this about. Unions want no change (beyond squeezing out more $). Democrats in power want union votes/$. Democratic voters toe the line with no real thought as to why.

Facts are we spend more per student than all but a few countries and our education system is not where it should be. Change is needed.

Charter schools and trashing standard tests may not be the answer but we need to do something....

Nothing like an education thread for Ishmael to trot out his two pet theories:

  • The innate inferiority of teh Negro race
  • Anything and everything bad in education is due to teacher's unions

Public schools around me in in my state are great. Always ranked at the top. The high school send kids to Harvard, Ivy leagues, and other top colleges and universities every year. Local voke tech school is getting upgraded (because we had a local vote and chose to invest in it) and turns out electricians, plumbers, mechanics, veterinary assistants, dental assistants and a host of other vocations and small local business supportive and well educated and skilled people. Sure there are pockets that suck in this state, but in the immortal words of Judge Smails "The world needs ditch diggers too".

Definitely get the Fed out of education. It is unnecessary. The same 15 states are always at the bottom. Same 15 states that have the worst drug problems, most domestic violence, biggest "takers" of tax dollars, most welfare, etc. They can dig ditches, no shame in that.

ETA: Teacher's unions are strong here and we voted down Charter School expansion. They should be LOCAL decisions!

DAVID HARSANYI: Public School Is Often The Most Destructive Institution In American Life.

Many liberals, for instance, tell us that racism is one of the most pressing problems in America. And yet few things have hurt African Americans more over the past 40 years than the inner-city public school system. If President Obama is correct, and educational attainment is the key to breaking out of a lower economic strata, then no institution is driving inequality quite as effectively as public schools.

Actually, teachers unions are the only organizations in America that openly support segregated schools. In districts across the country — even ones in cities with some form of limited movement for kids — poor parents, most typically black or Hispanic, are forced to enroll their kids in underperforming schools when there are good ones nearby, sometimes just blocks away.

The National Education Association spent $23 million last cycle alone working to elect politicians to keep low-income Americans right where they are. Public service unions use tax dollars to fund politicians who then turn around and vote for more funding. The worse the schools perform, the more money they demand. In the real world we call this racketeering.

Why are Democrat-run institutions such cesspits of racism and oppression? Because that’s where the money is.

Public schools are a scam only slightly worse then GlowBall Bull Shit

She's PERFECT for American schools!

Neurocore

Betsy and her husband Dick are chief investors in and board members of Neurocore, a group of brain performance centers offering biofeedback therapy for disorders such as depression, attention deficit disorder, autism, and anxiety.

The therapy consists of showing movies to patients and interrupting them when they become distracted, in an effort to retrain their brains.

According to The New York Times, a review of Neurocore’s claims and interviews with medical experts suggest that the company’s conclusions are unproven and its methods questionable.

Wrong, more funding is needed, always...it's the only thing that will work but never does.

My ex-wife invented this form of "therapy".

Eighteen minutes and twelve seconds on Charter Schools that is worth the watch Vouchers and Charter schools are like the current prison system in that they are too prone to abuse and become the worst crony capitalism sort of arrangement there can be.
.

One of the best examples of crony whatever is the relationship between Democrats and the teacher unions. Schools are failing students of ALL races by any real measure. Proficiency rates in reading and the most basic math truly suck.
In a lot of districts, public schools are the real prisons. Give parents a chance to make a choice for their children, and if the school they choose is lacking they can try another.
Who knows, faced with real competition public schools might even improve.
