Study Says the United States Is No Longer Considered a 'Full Democracy'

Story here.

Before the election, the U.S., along with 19 other countries, shared the honor of being a “full democracy” in an index maintained by The Economist Intelligence Unit. But after global democracy lost some ground in 2016, the U.S. government suffered the consequences, as it has been downgraded to a “flawed democracy,” according to the study.

The U.S., once a world leader in democratic governance, is now a “flawed democracy” because “popular confidence in the functioning of public institutions has declined.” The study cited Pew and Gallup surveys that indicated public trust in the government had “slumped to historic lows in the U.S.”

he timing of President Trump’s electoral win may have been coincidental, according to the authors of the study. They argue that distrust in the government predated Trump and that he was actually the beneficiary of the slump as opposed to the virus that caused it.

“The U.S. has been teetering on the brink of becoming a ‘flawed democracy’ for several years, and even if there had been no presidential election in 2016, its score would have slipped below 8.00 [the minimum score for a ‘fully democracy’],” the study said.

What's LBJ got to do with anything?

Saying that the confidence in American governance has been declining for several years is a little short sighted. It took a big dive starting with LBJ. Of course you could argue that the decline in democracy began with Social Security. Though, no matter what you call it, it's still the best thing going, flawed or not.

Actually, I think it started with the rise of movement conservatism. Of course, that happened in the same time period as the Johnson Admin.

USA has never been a "full" democracy, whatever that is. It's a Constitutional Republic.

Its founding fathers were deeply fearful of excessive democracy. Thus the electoral college rather than popular vote.

I knew somebody would say something like that at some point in this thread. But it is a debatable and irrelevant point. What the study finds, and it is very significant, is that the U.S. is less of a democracy than it used to be.

There is no such thing as a full and true and real democracy. That does not exist - even when people think it does.

You can have a system as close as possible to one, and do your best.

Without the Electoral College for example, many US states would have seceded long ago.

Of course, it's not a dichotomy, it's a sliding scale.

And we're sliding down. :(

Oh, and it's not just America. From the same article:

The fall of democracy appears to be a global trend according to the study. In the past decade, scores of almost half of the world’s countries saw a decline, thanks to “the increasing role played by nonelected technocrats, increased voter abstention and curbs on civil liberties.” According to the study, only 5 percent of the world’s population has the pleasure to live in a “full democracy."

The actual study is here.

Funny it ever was considering it's never been considered one except by idiots who don't know any better.

Not bad considering we aren't and never have been a democracy.

Oh yea....tyranny of the mob!! So wonderful, very successful historically. :D

See post #14.

Because fuck Trump, in reality we aren't any more or less democratic than we have been since everyone had the right to vote and considerably more democratic than we were when we started.

So look at the study and tell me what it gets wrong.
