Reorganization would be a bitch. (Didn't stop me from making the suggestion in the testers thread. I realize none of it is an original thought - but nothing happens if you just sit on your hands, too.)

I initially thought that categories could just be dropped because we have the tags, but then I looked at my tags and realized that I don't include the category in them because that's already taken care of. So my old stories would be missing the key tag in many cases.

I've only haunted the boards and submitted to Lit for five years, but I still have to wonder how society's growing tolerance for "alternative" sexual practices have affected categories and the like.

It certainly hasn't prompted Literotica to institute a bisexual category.

Bringing it back around to the OP's original post - I think some people still object to certain kinds of content and base their votes solely on that content without concern for the quality of the story.

Yep.

If the tags were at the top of the story instead of the bottom it would solve several problems.

If this change isn't being made in the current upgrading, the Web site certainly isn't paying much attention to user change requests.

I can't understand the relevance of the category Interracial Love. Despite some ancient myths, humans fit together in the same ways. Colour of skin doesn't change that.

Incest seems to be the most sought after category in the Looking For A Story forum but why is Incest so popular? Is it because it is rare in published erotic fiction and only available here? Take any basic love story and change the characters to Father/Daughter or Mother/Son and throw in a few "We shouldn't be doing this" statements and the story will attract far more attention than the original version.

I write some Femdom. There are people, usually Anon, who object violently to the idea of Femdom. Why? Abusing women seems a popular trope in stories and pictures, but women abusing men? Does that threaten their 'real male' fantasy? They're only stories - fiction, inventions but the reactions are sometimes over the top.

It's not only available here, but its availability is limited, so it makes sense that readers gather in the few places it's available, like here.

I agree. I've tried my hand at a couple interracial stories and can't seem to nail reader expectations, perhaps because I don't share their xenophobia? I believe there can be something interesting about seeing two different skin tones together, but that has more to do with the visual appearance and better suited to photography than my writing skills. Mostly, I think the appeal requires a healthy dose of racism.

I'll be surprised if several fans of writing incest don't object to this assessment and cry "No, they're tales of forbidden romance with heavy doses of romance! I appreciate the "forbidden love" aspect of the stories, but none of the "Did he get her pregnant" aspects.

A lot of the incest you find on other sites would be softer incest - step brothers, step sisters, step mother, etc. Or distant cousins. (Perhaps your country's history of royal bloodlines affects things?)

How very true! "Try Lesbian Sex" and you will find that some of the most highly rated stories, obviously written by men who have little or no idea of the feminine anatomy or psyche, portray young women forced into sexual slavery. These are stories written by men for men, or perheps more correctly, adolescent males. One of those authors is a multiple contest winner and his stories are consistently rated H.

Before someone goes of on a tangent here, more power to him for understanding and exploiting the market! But it is a very sad reflection on our society, a world ruled by men.

"Interracial" porn is about catering to that side of the psyche that still finds so-called "interracial" sex taboo and therefore kinky and thrilling, and gets erotic mileage out of that. Otherwise "regular" sex featuring diverse persons isn't "interracial." (We had a whole thread about this over in Story Feedback, it went super great. ;))

I have a much harder time understanding why "Anal" is a category. It's a pretty standard part of the sexual repertoire in a lot of contexts by this point; and to the extent to which a story specifically fetishizes it, why wouldn't it just go in "Fetish"?

It's also always been a bit confusing that Mind Control and NC/R are separate categories, given that Mind Control is just a subset of NC/R fantasy. Likewise with NonHuman vs. Sci-Fi & Fantasy -- virtually everything in the NonHuman category is sci-fi or fantasy.

I'm new to the boards, but a long-time reader. Here's my take. A well-written story that rocks me gets a 5. A good but "needs improvement" story gets a 4. Only rarely have I voted a 3 (usually for a hot idea poorly written) I've never voted a 1 or 2. Just because the writer's fantasy is not mine does not make it bad. If a story is truly bad to me, I click out after page 1. I have my standards, and you have yours, but isn't there already enough hate in the world?

(goes off humming "What The World, Needs Now, Is Love, Sweet Love")

Hi there, RabbleVox and welcome to the boards. It's your vote and you get to spend it any way you want. Your system is reasonable, however, many people gauge their success by the appearance of red H's on their story.

As an author on the site, I'm more generous. If a story entertains me, it's pretty much a guaranteed 5 from me. If I liked it a lot, it's 5 and a comment. If I can't finish it, I typically never get as far as voting, either.

Royal bloodlines? Our past Royals were so promiscuous that a large proportion of the UK's population seems to have a Royal in their ancestry - including me, apparently legitimately descended from Henry II via a female line.

Queen Victoria's children and grandchildren married into most European Royal Families.

I meant that as a playful tweak. I have no idea which empires were the most prone to maintaining Royal bloodlines, even if that meant first cousins. Heck, I don't even watch "Game of Thrones," so I'm lost on the fictional portrayals, too.

Methinks tracing a bloodline to include a Royal may be similar to those Americans who trace their roots back to revolutionary times and claiming inclusion to Daughters of the Revolution or some other such nonsense.

Once you trace back six or seven generations the number of relations who are your direct ancestors becomes massive.

Two parents; four grandparents; eight grandparents; sixteen great-grandparents; thirty-two great-great grandparents; sixty-four great-great-great grandparents - once you get to THEIR lines your possible links multiply.

I have one ancestor with a very unusual name. Because that name was so unusual whenever she appears in someone's family tree the links are flagged up quickly and it always IS her and no one else. Another researcher has worked out that there are at least 2,500 living people descended from her.

She was one of twelve children all of whom survived to marry and have children. She had twelve children herself, all of whom survived to marry and have children. They all had numerous children...

But her father had an unfortunate name: John Prick, son of John Prick; grandson of John Prick. She wrote her maiden name as Pryke. :D

The House of Windsor is German.

Maybe, but they share English ancestors going back to the Plantagents.

Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II's ancestors are supposed to include:

Julius Caesar and through him the Roman Goddess Venus;

Cleopatra and through her the Greek Goddess Aphrodite and the Egyptian Goddess Isis;

Many of the Viking Kings and through them most of the Norse Pantheon including Woden/Odin and Thor...

My line only links to the Viking Kings.

PS Contemporaries of Julius Caesar think his family was lying about Venus but believed Cleopatra.

The House of Windsor is German.
No it is not. It is British/English but with German roots and related by marriage with practically every other present and former Royal House of Europe.

But for the sake of argument let us say that Queen Victoria was 100% German because so many progenitors are listed as coming from German Principalities. Then by default Edward VII would count as being German too. But from then on:

Edward VII (100% German), m Princess Alexandra of Denmark

George V (50%), m. Mary of Teck

George VI (25%), m. Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon

Elizabeth II (12.5%), m. Philip of Greece

Charles (6.25%), m. Diana Spencer

William (3.125%), m. Catherine Middleton

George (1.5625%)

To further obfuscate the issue, can you guarantee that the genealogy is absolutely correct? There is still some question as to the legitimacy of Queen Victoria herself - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Legitimacy_of_Queen_Victoria

And there's even more to consider. Did you know that then Prince, later King Haakon VII of Norway was sterile and that the future Queen was inseminated by the Royal Medic, thus King Olav V was not the biological son of King Haakon VII?

At the very least, your blunt statement is both inaccurate and misleading.

As usual, you screw yourself in the second sentence. Do you have any idea what "its roots" means?

What is the House of Windsor was brought over from Germany. Even the House of Hanover before it was German, not English, brought over from Germany because no one left in England in line was the right religion at the time.

"The House of Windsor is the royal house of the United Kingdom and the other Commonwealth realms. The dynasty is of German paternal descent and was originally a branch of the House of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha, itself derived from the House of Wettin, which succeeded the House of Hanover as monarchs in the British Empire following the death of Queen Victoria, wife of Albert, Prince Consort. The houses of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha and Windsor have provided five British monarchs to date, including four kings and the present queen, Elizabeth II."

You try ever so hard not to claim you know something about almost anything, Nicky, and you always fail so miserably here. Tsk, tsk.

And, boy, can you remain butt hurt for a long time about everyone being out to get you on your "marvelous" stories here. Might have something to do with you being off your rocker. :D

Wait, Pilot! You're going too fast for me! I'm still back there at men being so simple-minded that they don't understand anything about a woman's body or psyche. OR literary masterpieces. Is it just me, or do the condescending comments just keep on coming? SMH

Not my problem. I've been married long enough that I pretty much understand everything my wife wants. (We're long past talking about hymens, for instance.) And when I was with men, we had no trouble staying on the same beam of interest either. And I learned long ago that you can make a living in writing without trying for literary masterpieces.

Snotty newbees trying to play queen of the mud hill don't worry me all that much, either.
