World War II is still with us.

Passed down from the soldiers, is the tale of blood and weapons.

In my home town, all the little old people from World War I, are dead.
Their quaint uniforms are stored away.
The flags they held in their hands,
on their day of remembrance,
are folded.

Children of soldiers
Children of wars
Children of America
Children seeking a refuge
from wars

What do we tell them ?

The heroic inscrutability that has defined Queen Elizabeth II since she ascended to the throne in 1952 faces a rigorous new challenge. Donald Trump is to make a state visit next summer, and if anything seems calculated to explore the outer limits of her sangfroid, this is it.

No one is better at masking boredom and being blandly pleasant to the grotesque. Yet has anything adequately prepared her for having President Donald J Trump to stay at Windsor Castle, and hosting a state banquet in his honour?

She will her do her duty with the usual stoical detachment, sitting up and thinking of England, and giving no hint of any personal distaste. But somehow it’s comforting to imagine Her Maj being as revolted by the requirement to suck up to President Trump as anyone else.

In 1933, Edward (later Duke of Windsor) said of the Nazi regime: “It is the only thing to do. We will have to come to it, as we are in great danger from Communists, too.”

As late as summer 1939, George VI’s brother, the Duke of Kent, hoped the war could be averted by using their Hessen relatives as a back channel to Hitler.

But it was too late. When Hitler signed his pact with Stalin in August 1939 and marched into Poland less than a month later, the last royal appeasers must have realised that they had been played all along. For the next 75 years, their courtiers had good reason to worry their Nazi flirtations would come to light.

To this day, the royal archives have ensured that correspondence between the monarchy and these German relatives remains closed to historians.

Palace criticises Sun over film of Queen giving Nazi salute as a child
Footage from the early 1930s, published by the Sun newspaper, shows Elizabeth raising her right arm straight in salute to the camera.

"The Queen is around six years of age at the time and entirely innocent of attaching any meaning to these gestures."

The paper said: “Elizabeth and Margaret are kids. Families of all kinds larked around apeing the stiff-armed antics of the faintly comic character with the Charlie Chaplin moustache who won power in Germany. But Edward, it said, “was already a fan of Hitler – and remained so as late as 1970, long after the Holocaust’s horrors were laid bare”.

he film lasts about 17 seconds and shows Elizabeth playing with a dog on the lawn in the gardens of Balmoral, the Sun claims, before she raises an arm to wave to the camera with Margaret. The Queen Mother then makes a Nazi salute and, after glancing towards her mother, Elizabeth mimics the gesture. The Queen Mother repeats the salute, joined by Edward, and Margaret raises her left hand before the two children continue dancing and playing on the grass.

Hmmm...

Sir Oswald ‘Tom’ Mosley, 6th Baronet of Ancoats (1896-1980)

On Saturday October 1st 1932 Mosley founded the British Union of Fascists to implement his policies. His early meetings were held at Hyndman Hall in Liverpool Street, Salford. During the 1930s his policies were increasingly controversial - his outspoken oratory and his militaristic street parades and rallies of black-shirted neo-Nazis, reminiscent of those taking place in Nuremberg in Germany, were frequently accompanied by unrest and violence. Several rallies were held at Queen's Park in Harpurhey. In 1933 one of his meetings at the Free Trade Hall was the scene of rioting, and police had to be called to separate various factions. Apart from a faithful minority following he failed to grab the imagination or sympathies of the people. In 1938 he published ‘Tomorrow We Live’ as well as a large number of leaflets, booklets and two regular weekly newspapers ‘The Blackshirt’ and ‘Action’. His views were vehemently pro-British, intensely xenophobic and overt in their racism.

She doesn't really need to suck up to him to give him a banquet. She can distance herself from him. The rest of us can as well.

You think that's Bill Clinton? *hoot, hoot*
At least in this clip Dubya doesn't try to yank a fake door and then stand looking foolish while the cameras roll.

ObTopic: Apparently some alt.right'rs express neo-Nazi and KKK and other non-PC attitudes as a FUCK YOU! to civil society and its norms. This is not new. At least from the 1950s onward a similar FUCK YOU! took the form of displaying the German Iron Cross. It's not a swastika but the Best Generation certainly saw its Nazi connection. Bikers wearing spiked helmets, Iron Crosses, and chains were not expressing nice PC sentiments. Were they Nazi sympathizers? Mostly not, but they certainly felt like left-behinds, same as Tromp and Bernie supporters.

No, but I think women should be warned about how handsy he has been known to get. :(

What makes you think Bill Clinton would be a future banquet hosted by Queen Elizabeth for Donald Trump? In one of you purple hazes again?
