What charity is your passion to donate or volunteer?

I am enjoying one I am on the board of, but thinking of doing Big Brothers Big Sisters or a local children's emergency shelter.

Does anyone here have a charity or a few they are passionate about and why?

Thank you.

Our charity: the local hospice that tended my partner's parents. (My own were so tended elsewhere.) We're in a small rural county with an aged population. Many are quite less well-off than we. By supporting hospice, we know we substantially help those. Our donations are mostly in kind, not cash, 'cause we're not rich. But their small-town thrift shop garners US$50k/month -- astounding in this county of 25k free citizens. (I exclude the 10k prisoners.)

It'll hopefully be some time before we'll need hospice's tender mercies -- but they'll be there for us and for all around us. It's both community support and self-interest.

I'm involved with an outreach program for At-Risk kids. we take groups of HS kids to colleges, universities, and trade schools in the state bro.

Wow, very local and special. Thank you for sharing.

That sounds like you are making a local impact as well.

I'm a volunteer advisor on pricing of second-hand books for two different Hospice charity bookshops and several other charity shops.

I give talks to the charity shop managers on what valuable books to look out for and how to sort books for sale.

I have posted one of my handouts, slightly modified, on Literotica:

https://www.literotica.com/s/valuing-books

It is based on UK second-hand books.

I've donated to World Vision for six years now. It is a religion-based organization, but I would not call myself religious (anymore). The child I sponsor is the same age as my son. It has been an experience to watch them communicate with each other, trading photos back and forth and learning how different their lives are.

I used to volunteer at the Humane Society (animal shelter); however, when the kid's baseball season started I couldn't. I've kept up a financial donation, but once the kiddo turns 8 he can volunteer with me so I think we'll start that back up in January.

I applaud anyone who can work directly with children in the capacity of Big Brothers or Sisters or a crisis shelter. So much ugliness in our world and how children are treated that it takes someone with a strong heart to step up.

A local shelter for women in crisis from their domestic partner. They gave me a free attorney when I needed it and I'm indebted to them forever.

I volunteer as a biologist for UC to help keep track of CA's bullshit.

I collect samples of all the things from a number of locations, I used to do lab work for them when I lived in the city but since I now live way out in the boonies I'm by default of my location now a field operator and haven't worked a lab in like a year.

I also occasionally run with a local conservation group, we pick up trash, do various conservation projects with all sorts of other people. From USFS to helping grandma maintain her land when she doesn't have 20 grand to pay pro's to do it.

Next Saturday (which is also my birthday), I'm judging a chili cook-off that's part of a fund raiser for the local Ski Patrol.

That's about it.

I'm a bit of a dick.

I got myself overextended by donating to too many and various police, fire, military and children's funds. So, now I just give to the Red Cross for major emergencies.

I serve on the board of a local charity that helps families in need of short term support. I donate merchandise regularly to local charities for their fundraising auctions. Which reminds me, I need to pick out a few items for an upcoming gala.

I foster puppies and dogs from our local rescue, as they are waiting for adoption.

Nothing charitable but I do volunteer for several non-profit community based groups that do good things for the local environment.

I do donate to the Heart and Stroke Fund and Tim Horton's Children Camps.

My service club puts a lot of emphasis on vision. There are literally hundreds of people in my community who see better because of glasses donated by my organization.

My last cash donation was to the local Food Bank.

Prior to that, I helped to sponsor the annual meeting for an organization that's a mix of science and engineering in cold climates. Then, there's $ to the ASME and the ASCE Foundations. And, Engineers without Borders.

I'm also a member of 4 different committees doing work in cold climates. My time is all gratis for this work.

Habitat for Humanity: it's a great organization; the work is rewarding and enjoyable - being part of a team helping others out and seeing tangible results for your efforts.

I think that I'll switch to the charities that Donald Trump gives to, because with his you can say you're giving X millions and then just not send a check.
