The question is front page all over the world, "Why did Comey write that letter now?" The short answer is, "He had no choice."
Faced with a rebellion within his own ranks the new evidence that points to obstruction of justice was an obstacle he couldn't overcome or ignore.
His fault was in not recommending prosecution damn near a year ago. The evidence was there.
This is merely conjecture on my part. In his desire NOT to appear partisan he allowed the investigation to drag out far too long. Not merely allowed it, forced it. "I need you to dig deeper into this." he told the investigators. They did and time dragged by.
Back to reality. His senior investigators recommended indictment. Again, not wanting to appear partisan, Comey played Pontius Pilate and attempted to wash his hands of the whole affair. He didn't want the FBI to appear political. The problem is that crime is NOT political, it's crime. How could he have forgotten that? America's "top cop" forgetting what his job is? And his reference to the information would have been 'leaked' is spot on, and if not from Wikileaks, from his own organization. That's how pissed off they are at him.
Needless to say the Democrats are going ape shit. "Comey is a political hack." And those that know that this is all being forced from deep within the ranks are yelling, "The senior investigators are 'right wing' extremists." While just a few months ago the Republicans were playing Robespierre.
In attempting to please everyone he's ended up pissing everyone off. His career is over. No one is going to trust him, the FBI, or the DOJ for some time to come. And while we're stuck with the FBI and the DOJ, Comey is expendable.
The train he tried to slow down, and then park on a siding, is on the lose now and he's going to be the first one run over. I believe he innately understands that.
Obama can't 'fire' him and if he resigns and if he resigns just who is Obama going to appoint to replace him? You can bet your ass that the Senate isn't going to ratify any appointment that Obama makes so then who within the senior investigators is Obama going to promote to 'temporary' head of the FBI?
It's the perfect storm and one of his own creation.
