The poetry board, I mean.

I finished reading the Lawrence Block book, and he closed with a poetry eye-poke.

Poetry is popular with bad writers because its so convenient to write a few lines of crap than many lines of story crap and many pages of novel crap.

If people wrote real poems the work would be more challenging than stories or books.

Many years ago, in my undergraduate days, we were encouraged to consider poetry to be the highest form of literature. The silver medal went to the short story. Plays, novels, essays, and first division journalism scrapped it out for the bronze. :)

Poetry is harder to write than prose, done right.

A real poem is supposed to express a truth in an artful, elegant way. At LIT whatever falls from your ass is poetry.

Tell all the truth but tell it slant

Tell all the truth but tell it slant

Too bright for our infirm Delight
The Truth's superb surprise
As Lightning to the Children eased
With explanation kind
The Truth must dazzle gradually
Or every man be blind —
