Multiple chapter stories and sex scenes?

For those that write multiple chapter erotic stories on the site, do you put a sex scene in every chapter?

I love multiple chapter stories, but I don't feel like it is necessary to put a sex scene in every chapter. Instead I tend to focus on the dialogue and flow leading from chapter to chapter furthering the plot and storyline. I almost feel like that is a wasted effort posting a story here. But, it doesn't discourage me. Writing and storytelling are a hobby and passion to me with a strong emphasis on "storytelling".

Many chaptered stories on Literotica are just sex scenes for each 'chapter'.

Unlikely Angels is up to 13 chapters in nine posts. Some of the posts contain more than one chapter of the story. Of those 9 chunks, only four have sex. Others have some sexual tension, but not sex. I will probably put the next three chapters out in one post. The next two without sex and the last with sex.

UA isn't overwhelmed with readers -- partly because of the long lag between posts -- but it has fans and it's ratings are good, as are most comments. There are even favorable comments about the long buildup between sex scenes.

It probably depends a lot on the category. You can go quite a while in Romance without a sex scene and not get complaints. I believe in the current long story I have up (Rhythm and the Blue Line), there's no sex until about chapter five or six. I did similar things with some nonhuman stories I had posted some time ago. I would not be surprised if you could do it in SciFi as well.

Other categories, like Erotic Coupings or maybe BDSM, people expect more sex more often, I think. Those categories may not lend themselves to longer stories in the first place, although I know there are some there, so I'd expect that affects how the stories are written in terms of how much sex the author feels they should or want to include.

Yes, I tend to have sex in every chapter. Initially that was a directive from publishers of erotica--that there would be sex in every chapter. I'm not sure that still is in standard instructions as the e revolution has broadened out the scope of erotica and porn. I still do it by habit, though. I don't think it's needed now in something being published complete, but I think it would be more important to do it when you are serializing the work if the sex is a significant element in the story and this is where the targeted audience is. Readers attracted to the sex element might just waltz away from continuing to read if they encounter a whole chapter that doesn't include that element.

Thanks for the very enlightening insight,Penn. It's most appreciated and helpful to me. :) 👠👠👠Kant

My scribblings usually include several per chapter, but lets be honest here, I am writing smut.

A story focused on character and plot development could suffer if it is just a scene thrown in just to have one in every chapter.

Write your stories your way. I like to know that people enjoy my words, but I am not going to change my style so more do. Style changes are to improve my abilities.

Mine don't. I have written a few stories that are 14 chapters long and one only has one actual sex scenes and a bunch of sexual tension scenes. The other has several sex scenes but not one in every chapter.
For that reason I have been hesitant to post them here.

I am not scared to post a chapter to my story that doesn't contain a sex scene so long as it contributes to the overall storyline.

I have someone editing one now, and then she's going to work on the other, so I'm going to submit them soonish.
People can either like them, or not, lol.
One is sort of a thriller and while there is a lot of sexual tension, there's only one true sex scene.

I don't always put a sex scene in each chapter, though since it's Erotica, I will put something sexually arousing in. That could just be describing a person being turned on, or some such situation that could be Erotic in of itself.

Example is in one of my stories, no sex or even touching is even involved in it, just a very unexpected dirty conversation.

Yes, I write sex into every chapter. Not because I need to, but because I *want* to. The exception: my highest-rated story, a long-ish historical romance, has only one explicit sex scene, a blowjob toward the end. But implicit sex permeates the tale.

I'm getting away from multi-chapter pieces, heading more toward standalone episodes. Segments within an episode may look like mini-chapters, and there's not always sex in every segment. But when a reader clicks a link to reach a chapter or episode or novella I've written, they'll find sex to read -- probably lots of sex, with groups and/or relatives.

The ones I have read don't and the story is what makes the sex, when it comes along, better.

With mine, it depends on what the story is about, but putting a sex scene in every chapter is actually hard when you are trying to tell a story that isn't about the sex. People have sex, but not all the time. We would like to think we could, but even the randiest male on the planet would soon die from exhaustion, I assume. Besides there is some much more to life than sex, good sex.

I seem to have no control over whether or not I put sex in a chapter. I'll start a chapter off thinking I'm not going to then one thing leads to another and I end up with the biggest sex scene I've ever written. My stories have a mind of their own, I never know how they will end until I type the last word. A short story may become an epic or the other way around.

I've been on here for years and this is my first forum post. I guess I just popped my man-cherry.

Shouldn't be a problem on an erotica story site. There's no reason why the stories here wouldn't be about sex, even if nonerotic stories are tolerated.

Depends on the genre

I definitely also think it depends on the genre. In my current series if I didn't include sex scenes nobody would read it. But I'm also working on a sci fi story that has very little sex at least for the first couple of chapters. My opinion though do what you feel is right for the story. The great thing about being an author is it's your world.

Yeah, a sci-fi story would have so much extra needing to be developed in it over, say, erotic coupling, that I'd think the sex wouldn't be as prominent.

Yes, a sex scene in every story or chapter with the characters I'm writing about right now is a must. The main characters are sex goddesses that feed off of sexual energy humans produce when they orgasm.

Of course it depends on the genre... and the story. Many LW tales cover consequences of offstage sex. Many romances have much-delayed sex. An intricate narrative may minimize sex. Sex may be implicit rather than explicit.

But I generally try to titillate readers (and myself) so I slather-on the copulations and slurpings. That's entertainment, folks.

That's always been my theory on it, and I always design things with at least one sex scene per chapter, or rather, it may be more correct to say I generally craft the chapter structure around the sex scenes. This does vary a little depending on whether the sex scenes are what suggest the plots of each chapter, or if the overall storyline came together first and the sex scenes need to be inserted into it.

The one hard and fast rule, though, is that there is no hard and fast rule. The needs of the particular story at hand come first. There does seem to be plenty of acceptance for stories without constant sex if they are well-written.

Hi all, newbie here.

I've literally just posted this question in another part of the site - wish I'd seen this thread first!

Some good points are made about the type of story being written. I particularly like the attitudes of those who will just write - if people like then great. If not, oh well... I had been reluctant to make my first submission because I thought the lead in to my first sex scene was too long. Seeing some comments, it's nothing of the sort (thought haters will still hate).

I initiated a steamy sex scene in "A Slut's Triangle" for various reasons. One to showcase my ability to be able to do it. Second, because the title of the storyline demands that something like sex should be up front and readers would expect that. Finally, I think it adds to the story and let's the storyline start off on a great note.

The storyline doesn't have sex in every chapter since I believe there's more to a great story than just the sex scenes. I actually use the sex scenes in the storyline if they are going to contribute to the overall storyline.

Since the storyline is mostly dialogue driven, there is tons of communication within the sex scenes that progress the storyline.

My Science Fiction storyline "The Diablo Masquerade" had a sex scene in every chapter. But I did notice that my first chapter had to unfold the characters, scene, mood, plot, and background a bit more in depth before the sex scene happened. Thus, chapter 1 was by far the longest chapter in the series.
