Comedian Fined $42,000 by Human Rights Tribunal for Telling a Joke

I made terrible statements about the intellect of special education students and was threatened with legal action by the administrative staff of my high school.

Fortunately nothing ever came of those threats.

Does having it happen three weeks ago make it less terrible that a government can do that?
Hate speech laws have survived court challenges in Canada, and not in the US. Hard to say which is more terrible.

Oh, I'd say fining someone for telling a joke is more terrible. A logical progression would be insulting one of the many lovable Lit members from the Great White North, then getting fined for doing so when you travel to Edmonton for the annual Wheat Festival.
Eventually, though, the U.S. and Canada will extradite for the crime of hurting feelings.

It's not OK for an A-list comedian to make such insults his stock in trade. Of course he should have the right to say such things privately, but he is making money by saying them publicly.
