Ugh. I hate that. How is someone with a very good working vocabulary able to guess which words are deficient in the other person's vocabulary?
In this case, even limiting your vernacular to monosyllabic words wouldn't help.

Those are the best kind.
With regard to handsome women, I use it mostly for women that have classic, patrician faces with great bone structure who age really well. Lauren Bacall was a handsome woman.
I should try winsome at times, but I don't have a feel for the word, having never seen it used outside of books.

I think handsome works well for women who are attractive but whom you might not refer to as pretty or beautiful.
For a moment, I was rather tickled by the thought that you pictured me, then I realized it was in quotes, and only used as an example. Still, it's a lovely thing to read.
