Taken from a plane at the moment of a lightning flash, it illustrates both the ferocity of a turbulent atmosphere and the beauty of Mother Nature. A strong, roiling updraft; a smooth, flat anvil; and the overshooting top — all features of intense developing thunderstorms.

The photo was taken over the Pacific Ocean from the cockpit of an airplane. The photographer and pilot, Santiago Borja, says he was circling around it at 37,000 feet altitude en route to South America when he captured this spectacular view.

Borja said it was difficult to get the shot in near-darkness and during a bumpy ride. “Storms are tricky because the lightning is so fast, there is no tripod and there is a lot of reflection from inside lights,” Borja told The Washington Post in an email.

“I like this photo so much because you can feel the amazing size of the storm and its power,” Borja said. “But at the same time it’s wonderful how peacefully you can fly around it in still air without touching it.”

Borja is a first officer for LATAM Ecuador Airlines. The photo was taken with his Nikon D750 camera south of Panama on a Boeing 767-300.

It makes me sad how gleeful people get about a death these days.

Accidental gun death - the anti-gun people dance in the streets.

Black guy gets killed by the cops - someone gets gleeful about how he brought it upon himself.

Mass shooting happens - people on the left hope it's a right-wing extremist and people on the right hope it's a Muslim extremist.

No death seems to go by without some gleeful thread being made about it.

I only get excited when murderers are put to death, but then the anti-death penalty people give me a hard time.

There really is no winning these days.

You know, all racist pieces of shit like you should try an experiment:

- become a convicted sex offender for raping, and impregnating, a 14-year-old girl

- beat up women in your life and be convicted of domestic abuse

- break and enter into others' homes and aggravated assault them while stealing from them

- consume, possess, and deal drugs while illegally being armed

- threaten another person with your illegally possessed weapon, have 911 called on you for doing that, fully resist the police when they come to confront your criminality to the point they have to tackle you to the ground to subdue you, and then, when the police yell "GUN!" as your criminally possessed weapon exposes itself and they tell you not to move or they'll blow you away...

Move anyway and have your survivors report back and inform us WHAT THE FUCK YOUR SKIN PIGMENTATION HAD TO DO WITH YOU NOW BEING A DEAD MOTHERFUCKER.
