In all societies, we must balance the rights and needs of individuals against each other. My personal liberty to swing my arm ends at your nose (for a simple example).

While it's easy to swing around terms like "personal liberty" and "freedom of conscience" we have to recognize that we live in a society which - to use the terms of Rousseau and others - makes us a part of a social contract. There is no one "correct" contract, but different society, faced with different situations, will arrive at a different social contract. The writers of the Declaration of Independence were steeped in this philosophy (Hobbes and Locke and others being new ideas), and you can see them reflected in the choice of language. They did not take the breaking of the social contract lightly.

In my work, I do (and I'm glad I do) a variety of things. While some things are "regular standbys" I'm always interested in trying new topics. I can't be very much more detailed than that, but it's kind of the same thing.
