Alien race follows Lit rules.

Lovecraft put up a good post about how sometimes the stories can go up like the character's sexual attributes just magically appear when they turn 18.

Got me to thinking, what if there was an alien race where that's exactly what happens?

In other words, what if they only received defining sexual traits when they reached adulthood? They go through childhood either being gender less or sexless and then adulthood comes and suddenly everything just pops out?

What would their society be like or how would they react to meeting humans for the first time?

I've read some good stories like that. Often the premise is that people guess at which sex teenagers will turn out to be due to their personality and whether they are tall and broad or short and petite, but either the teen really doesn't want to become the sex everyone thinks they will, or the teen doesn't want to become an adult at all, or the new adult is unpleasantly surprised to find out they are the opposite of what everyone thought they should be.

Or not necessarily the opposite if there are more than 2 sexes one might become. It might be that one sex is very rare and another is very common, so everyone assumes they will become the common one until proven otherwise, unless someone has such a superiority complex that they assume they will become the rare one.

The downside to this kind of setting is that it would probably result in even more dysphoria than we have in real life, and dysphoria is a hideous feeling and one of the major causes of people being suicidal or self-neglectful/self-harming.

My Shelacta series of stories is based on a planet similar to ours but women are predators. They become sexually aroused at age 18 but have to use their sexual traps on five men, including killing one, to become fully fertile adults.

Ogg, this is why you're fucking awesome, because the 'real men' must hate you for stories like that.

Uncertain why anybody would hate this but I live in a world where a not insignificant amount of people use the term Social Justice Warrior as a slur. I must have grown up in the wrong generation because 'back in mah day' you could easily identify the villains in any piece because they were against the warriors of justice.

On subject I like the idea. I'm actually curious how it effects all of the other aspects of the "human experience" and expectations and how much of it essentially comes preprogrammed.
