His repeated attacks are not to get to us, but to get his ilk fully engaged and targeting others for what they say. Now on the internet, anonymity allows you to shrug it off as the barking of a howler monkey troupe. In real life, what happens is that the seans of the world look and around and realize that everyone screaming is screaming the same thing and no one is responding, so they know they are right. But, in reality, people have learned to keep their thoughts to themselves in order not to be targeted, which is why the election caught the progressives completely by surprise.

That's how free speech and Democracy work with the Left. We're free to say whatever we want, but you need to be shut up. When the Left loses an election, then even more people must be shouted and screamed at so they understand what is the right thing to do in the next election.

And this, to borrow a thread title, is exactly how Trump could win this election while losing all of the polls. It is the Bradley Effect that teaches us, when you are in that silent majority, you often worry about what the pollster will think of you, so you give them the answers you think they are looking for, but in the privacy of the polling both, you are finally free (for now), to express your personal beliefs by choosing politicians who are talking to you and not talking at you with total indifference to what you might "stupidly" happen to believe.

Too soft? The UK did not sign up to the Schengen open borders but EU citizens could freely come to live and work in the UK with no limits at all.

Refugees could not come to the UK. That is why the Jungle exists at Calais. Refugees, once in Europe, can travel across any borders within Europe because they are open. I could drive from France into Belgium, The Netherlands and Germany and not notice when I've crossed a border.

There might be a roadside sign saying "Welcome to Belgium", the speed restriction might be different, and traffic signs might use a different language or typeface - but no border control at all.

They decided to erase borders, currencies and nationalities and live under the protection of the US military in order to achieve one goal: demilitarization and the end of internecine continental war. Like the anti-gun nut in the US, it is quite the desirable goal and no one gets nervous until Russia marches into the Crimea and Ukraine and the US elites declare, "not our fight!" Spain has almost a better chance of holding on to Catalonia than it does prying Gibraltar away from the British.

Gibraltar voting overwhelmingly to remain in the EU was expected. They have a land border with Spain that Spain sometimes tries to close AGAINST EU Treaty agreements.

Gibraltar has been British since 1704, and the Spanish accepted that in 1714. If you change the status of Gibraltar, you might as well redraw the whole map of Europe.

BUT, and this is important, the people of Gibraltar DO NOT WANT TO BE SPANISH. Self-determination applies. If over the last few decades Spain had been more conciliatory to Gibraltarians and the government of Gibraltar then there might be room for a Monaco/Andorra type agreement between Gibraltar and Spain. But Spain WON'T recognise the government of Gibraltar and won't talk to it.

The UK's position is that they will support what the Gibraltarians want. The Gibraltarians have said loudly and often that they do not want to be Spanish, nor part of Spain.

IF Spain wanted to invade Gibraltar militarily, they could. The armed forces on Gibraltar would be insufficient to repel a determined Spanish attack. But Spain would become a pariah in developed countries and Gibraltarians might make friends with Basque terrorists. Gibraltarians have long memories of Spanish 20th and 21st century hostility dating back to the Spanish Civil War when refugees fleeing Franco's armies came to Gibraltar.

Solving the relationship between Gibraltar and Spain wouldn't be easy and the current Spanish government has been hostile to the Gibraltarians.

The Gibraltarians aren't all saints. Smugglers and dubious financial trading companies abound in a tiny place, irritating the Spanish.
