An Odd Thing When My Stories are "Favorited"

No complaints or any conspiracy theories but just an odd observation.

Whenever one of my stories is selected as a favorite by someone, I like to see who that is and most times thank them for doing so. (Same thing when anyone leaves a comment.) I look to see what other stories and other authors they like.

In almost cases, the other stories they like are cuckold stories. My stories as about as far from that as you can get. (Not a knock on them but they're just not my thing.)

If anything, I would think that those that like cuckold stories would hate mine. Mine are very much the erotic coupling variety. Highly graphic but almost always about long term relationships between couples.

Go figure.

It's probably more a headscratcher that they managed to find your story to read than that they appreciated the variety your story provided them.

I continually scratch my head at the old stories that I see being favorited, especially the ones that dropped way below my own threshold of "favorite" over time.

I get loads of favorites from people who have never posted a story and have TONNES of fav' authors and TONNES of fav' stories. The high majority of people dont even have a written profile.

It's been buggin' me for ages. Is it normal?

There is a record of who else they have favorited (which is what the OP has indexed)--or they don't even have an account.

That reminds me, I do need to thank those who do favorite my stories because it tells me that they did take the time to read it.

One thing related to the subject though, those who do fav it, why don't they leave a comment? I only ask because those I do fav, I always leave a comment. If anything those I comment on, I actually don't always fav the story or author.

A good many who favorite me don't actually vote the story. But that's their choice. At least they did favorite the story.

A lot of the time, favorites are more bookmarks than anything.

I observe the opposite, people who favorite my stories tend to have favorited stories that are very similar.

There must be another commonality that you are just not seeing.

A good story is a good story. I have incest, loving wives, lesbian, bdsm, and lots of other types of stories favorited. My writing can go from sweet and loving to noncon.

Most people are multifaceted and different moods call for different themes. Nothing unusual with people who like differing themes.

I agree tah favorite is used as a book mark, I have done that numerous times.

I maybe keep around a dozen stories on my favs list permanently and rarely find one to add.

Best way to handle favs and comment sis not worry anout them. I have one story with 66 comments another with 0. I have no idea how many people have fav any of my stories or me as an author. I write for me and if you like it great if not great. It doesn't effect me either way.

The new authors control panel which was supposed to be in beta will have a lot more information about favorites and such. There is supposed to be a new bookmark feature also. Right now the only way to know your total favorites is if you are on the top 250 favorites list.

The beta test has been held up by a bunch of glitches the new panel has caused. They are working on it.

On the original recent activity list for each author, you used to be able to see the favorites and the unfavorites. You would see a story favorited on day and unfavorited the next or even the same day.

I think your expectations may be set too high if you're hoping they'll favorite AND leave a comment. Not sure most people would have much more to say than "good" or "hot."

Wonder if things would be easier if people could vote/comment with emoticons? LOL!

If they are truly favoriting a story I don't think it would be too much to expect that they vote it as well--other than that they may not understand the system, with is forgivable. I think, though, that TxRad is right in that many are just using the favoriting to index the story for a possible read at some time later. Then, of course, they wouldn't also vote on it.

You're probably right that emoticons would probably get more response.

I;m with the OP; I see what people who favorite me also favorite, and I'm often baffeled. If it's not incest readers it's people into vampires. I don't do anything with in-family sexuality, or even busband/wife. I don't touch anything in the vampire/werewolf/evil supernatural genre.

My best guess is that it's got something to do with archtypes. A vampire is nothing but a powerful male figure who can insist on his way; father figures wield a similar kind of symbolic power. I do stories about people with authority, so something must resonate.

For me, it's the opposite. I get favorited by the right crowd.

When I first started, I mainly wrote mother/son stories. So naturally, the people who favorite authored me were all incest readers.

But I remember when I posted my first brother/sister story. It turned out to be popular, thus had a lot of favs. I noticed that I was getting favorited by people who almost exclusively had brother/sister stories in their favorite list.

Same thing when I started writing BDSM, lesbian, group, ect...

When I write in those categories, I was getting favorited by people whose list consisted primarily of those genres.

And that's the exciting thing about writing a variety of stories. In the end, you get more readers. And if you're lucky, they'll like you enough to check out you other stories.

I've never bothered dwelling on this, people have eclectic taste. I equate it with my I-pod that has everything from 50's do wop to hardcore death metal, different reads for different moods here.

The thing that baffles me is the 'recommended for you" feature that keeps showing me stories in categories I've never read in.
