School Board Votes to Ban Having Valedictorians Because the ‘Competition’ is ‘Unheal

There is no end to liberal insanity. It's like an epidemic.

Soon they'll admit everyone who applies into Harvard Medical School. It's only fair.

It's fucking Wake County, North Carolina. That's Tea Party insanity.

Is that because in your world there is no reason to work hard in order to better yourself, to strive to achieve more then average?

It is hard to imagine that thought process... or lack there of.

I agree that it's hard to imagine your thought process on this.

I'm all for bettering oneself but people who are working solely for a grade may not really be bettering themselves.

Perhaps you, Miles or Busybody can explain why being valedictorian is so important.

It's important for the same reasons winning the conference title in any sport is important. If you don't think winning is important, then no, there is no value in being named valedictorian. For me, though, I think winning is a good thing. I've never not wanted to win. How a school can award winning in athletics but decline to award winning in academics is beyond me.

But this is old news. It happened a decade or so ago here.

What do you win for being valedictorian?

The Spurs, Heat & Raptors all won their conferences or divisions.

You don't think that being first academically in your graduating class is analogous to being first in your athletic conference? As a player, what do you win if you or your team win the Illinois Valley (high school) Conference? Not a damn thing except you get to know how good it feels to win, which is the same thing you get when you are named valedictorian.

I can't believe I'm arguing Busybody's point for him. I'm embarrassed. I have to go now.

At least with winning an athletic conference you get home court in the playoffs.

Kindof towards the other end of the spectrum from Busybody, but his posts are starting to crack me up too.
I guess BB attracts them all lol

No, it's pretty much par for the course for Busybody. He blindly parrots an op-ed piece about something he knows nothing about. That's of course Busybody actually believes the things he posts.

Being from down under what do you find so humorous about this issue?

Busybody posts about politics, I've never denied an interest in politics. In fact I'm happy to state that I love discussing politics and issues that face the country. But that doesn't really address what I wrote and this isn't a liberal or conservative issue. In fact I'd wager that the county this comes from is a rather conservative county, and I'm agreeing with this new policy.

Getting Valedictorian is essentially the same as getting Home Court advantage as far as getting into better universities and the job market.

I'm going to disagree with you about that. Take a look at the article and you'll see that kids here were padding their GPA with super easy classes. That's something colleges look at and take into consideration. A college will more likely take the kid with a lower GPA but took more challenges courses because that kid is much likely more ready and serious about college.
