Now they're in positions of authority and they had no idea how slippery the slope would be when they started flashing their parts online at 14. It's not just women and it's not just sunday school teachers - stories show up in regular school, scouts, anywhere kids are old enough to be hot and young enough to be persuadable. It's hard to resist - texted sexuality can be just as hot as the real thing - with no apparent drawbacks or awkward social consequences. Until someone gets caught.

It's part of a larger shift. When I was in college, students and teachers DID NOT get sexual. If you did, you were canned. I grew up in a small town (17,000 people) and during the 1970's alone we had the following cases:

1~ A high school English teacher being yanked out of class one day after the head of the county health department walked into the principal's office and informed him three 15 and 16 year old boys had reported she was the only person they'd ever had sex with after testing positive for VD. She agreed to resign and turn in her teaching certificate to keep from having charges filed. Never hit the press.

2~ "Sunday school teacher/Girl Scout leader Mom" decided one summer day to pick up a new hobby of popping the neighborhood boys' cherries (ages 14-16) while hubby was at work and her kids at church camp. She lived in a fairly large subdivision and admitted to her husband she had done at least a half dozen when he caught her. No press, no arrest, no charges, quick and quiet divorce, she moves out of town and life went on with most people none the wiser.

3~ "Stay-at-home Mom" married to local business and civic leader decides her 15 year old daughter's 16 year old boyfriend was cute and starts checking him out of school during the day and into a motel located close to the high school for some afternoon "tutoring" sessions. What seems like an epidemic is nothing more than cases hitting the news far more than previously. Does texting/sexting play a part? Probably the same as notes that "I need to see you after class" and "Would you like to take a break from mowing my yard and have some lemonade?" did years before. It's just high-tech now.
