How do I respond to public comments?

In a nutshell, if I wish to respond to a specific comment at the end of my stories, how would I do so?

If it wasn't an anonymous reply then you might be able to use the forum's PM function, but few of the readers use the forum.

You can reply by making a comment of your own. That would be public. There might not be a way to make a private reply.

Seems cumbersome, but thanks very much for the prompt reply. I figured I'd need to post my own comment; there doesn't seem to be any way to link my comment to the one I'm referencing, though.

You are correct, there isn't a way to quote the comment in question. Let common sense be your guide and you'll work it out.
